Having read the Haynes manual before I picked the Disco up, I noticed it was missing the front propshaft gaiter.  Knowing I was going to do both UJs, I bougt a new one in readiness.

Problem is, it does not look like the propshaft ever had a gaiter on it, could not see any evidence of "shadows" or similar.  So I have put it back on without the gaiter...there seems to be no wear in the splines at 155000 miles so I am wondering if it's had a new prop at some stage and someone has forgotten the gaiter.

I really hope that it does not need one as I really don't fancy grovelling round underneath it again!

The vehicle is an M reg 1995 300 TDi manual.  Any thoughts?

Sound more like the old one was split and took it off for mot or something, Its worth changing them, as they are only a couple of quid for the part, especially if you are doing the uj anyway in my opinion

It does protect the splines especially if you are doing more than road work, the axles flexing will rub any muck attached to it into the splines

The big bellows gaitor went on to pre-EFi Rangies.  From the mid 80s on most LR products had a small rubber doughnut type seal over the end of the female splines to keep muck out.  You should be able to see where this belongs.

Thanks for the advice guys, only one thing for it, crawl around under other people's trucks and see what they look like!
