Defender handbrake adjustment
« on: March 21, 2007, 18:49:38 »
Embarrassing rolling backwards with full handbrake on!  Miles away from next service, so wanted to try adjusting DIY for the first time ever.

Defender TD5 110 CSW.  Is it complicated?  Any hints / pitfalls / special tools to watch out for?  Thanks, Age.
3 Defenders on and I'd still buy another.....

need either an offset 17mm spanner or a shallow 17mmocket & ratchet,go underneat & with the hand brake off & the wheels chocked wind the adjuster in clockwise untill the drum is just lightly scuffing the shoes, you can check by moving it side to side from underneath,

Unless of course there is no friction material left on the shoes or the cable has stretched to new lengths.  In which case allocate a weekend and make lots of strong tea.

It's not a real car unless it's over 30 years old!

Yeh you may have snapped the cable, i did one at work with a snapped cable, take the rubber gaitor off your handbrake and undo the split pin and take the pin out, then pull the cable and if it pulls out ya need a new un.

is it sorted? if not the reason mine wasnt working was the output shaft from the transfer box was leaking ep90 into the handbrake drum causing it to be completly useless. first off i changed the output shaft  oil seal but turned out the shaft its self had a groove worn into it so landed up replacing that a few weeks later

Not just a couple of hours then? I must have done something wrong (or right) when I did mine as a new cable, shoes and cleaning of the expander unit was all completed inside of 2-hours.
