Gearing issues!!!

right it don't seem to be the clutch that's the problem no more.

as I have been trying to get it to slip again but it won't even dropping the clutch at 20mph in 3rd at high revs.

so the only other thing I can think of is that the gearing is too long?

even pulling out of junctions on slight hills it struggles. and after the weekend pulling away up a steep hill of road as u can tell it didn't like it and seemed and smelt as the the clutch was slipping.

but could the gearing cause this? as it just didn't have enough power to get it moving properly.


what could cause this? could it be running a V8 box?

I'm running a isuzu TD on a rangie box (but unsure of what box I'm running)

just had a look and the ration on the transfer box is 1.222??

does this sound about right?

Yes it does.  The TDi had a longer ratio on 1st to help pull away but all RRC had the same transfer box.

If yo have big tyres then you will be having a problem, It would make sense if your car had been a V8 though.

my old V8 had no problems whatsoever and was running 33" tyres on it with a lift.


there is definatly something wrong somewhere, its not the clutch(which is what i thought it was) its not the gearbox/transfer.

Could i put a V8 box onto it to have a shorter gear?


what could it be it doesnt like pulling away and definatly didnt like starting on a hill the weekend which i could happily of done in my old V8...


perhaps im gonna have to go back to a V8 with GAS.... :lol:  :lol:

Funny, because my 3.9 runs 235/85 and it's defintely struggling.

that is weird i had no problems with hills in mine was great.. :)

<-----------Well this one, runs a LT77 with a Borg-Warner and standard diffs on 235/85 and it won't always stay in top, especially if it's towing.

In fact make that hardly gets into top when towing.

And it's slower than a 300TDi :shock:

What about using Series diffs, that should get your overall gearing back down?

Series diff will be too weak for the rest of the drivetrain + a 4.7:1 is a bit over the top really. Sure you can pull away and go up hills but your top speed will be about 50mph.  :(

Options are, 4.1:1 diffs or a Defender 1.41:1 ratio transfer box.
These will both give you the same final drive ratio and you won't have te problems pulling away or getting up hills.

The gear & transfer box was set up for the power and torque of a V8 or TDi (which ever was in there before) and if the Izuzu doesn't have the low rev torque of the other two then you will get problems.  :wink:

One other thing, I take it you've checked that the brakes and hand brake arn't binding?

think im just used to my V8.....

Diesels are a lot higher geared so need to start using the gears which are there really  :lol:  :lol:  :lol:

my rrc pickup with 235/85's (soon to be 33's  :twisted: ) pulls away fine but the previous owner fitted a defender tbox i think.
