SORN, MOT and TAX?
Thrasher:
Little question - I am getting Piglet back on the road, however he has no Tax and no MOT as he is SORNED. Is it legal for me to drive him to the garage to get an MOT. Secondly will it be legal for me to drive him home and then get a tax disc, or shall I get the garage to try and sort it for me?
Budgie:
I think you're fine to drive to the MOT station, provided you've booked it in with them prior to leaving home.
If stopped on the way then you should be fine.
Same applies when going home again.
As for getting it taxed again, not sure. You could try stopping off on the way back and getting it but remember to take the SORN and registration documents with you, as well as the insurance. :wink:
Best check up on the DVLA website and see what's required and also, maybe, call the local police station and ask about driving to the MOT station just to make sure. :wink:
I'll have to go through this if I ever get the engine back into the Rangie so lets us know how you get on. :D
sleeplessparadise:
We asked this for my motor last year and as I understand it from our MOT tester as long as you are booked in for an MOT you can drive it a "reasonable" distance to the MOT station. As Budgie says if you take the V5 and insurance certificate with you, you can always tax it on the way home as long as it passes :wink:
hobbit:
Agree with the above, but dont stop to tax it on the way from the mot, you are still legally on sorn, play safe and straight there and back, then nip and tax it by some other means
Good luck with the mot :wink:
tomarse:
yes it is legal. you just need insurance to drive to a prebooked mot.

When can an untaxed vehicle be used on a public road?
An untaxed vehicle cannot be used or kept on a public road.
There is one exception:
You can drive an untaxed vehicle on a public road to and from a pre-arranged:
* MOT testing station
* VIC testing station
* an approved vehicle weight testing station which covers design weight certificate or plated revenue weight
* reduced pollution test
* provided that adequate insurance cover for your use of that vehicle is in place
