I'm told that should i put a TD5 disco engine into my truck that there is an alarm on the ECU that would have to be diabled before i could start it and that you would be able to do this?? :?

If so what sorta price :?

Why have you been told that then???  :?

You would need to use the Defender Alarm unit - which is easy to set up

I get told alot of things! Everyone knows something.

So when i plumb in the engine it should start straight up ? :?

Do i have to have an alarm? :?

I've no idea why someone would suggest using a Discovery engine and box... perhaps it's because a Disco is slightly more powerful as standard, but irrevent when it's remapped!!

The other problem would be using a Disco spec ECU - if you tried to connect it to a Defender Td5 dashboard you'd find your temp gauge working the wrong way round (not just a case of swapping wires either!!)

Personnally I'd go for a Defender spec engine (a Disco engine is virtually the same though) and a Defender spec gearbox  - that way everything fits and parts are off the shelf - and it looks properly done, not someones bodge attempt.

To get the engine to run the ECU needs to be coded to the alarm ECU (10AS unit) - a Td5 will not run without a 10AS unit, but the 10AS unit can be put into it's most state so won't actually do anything (not even act as an immobilser) - but it still needs to send a signal back to the ECU.

Ideally you need to have the injector codes in the ECU - but a Td5 will run with the wrong codes, but isn't ideal.

The ECU also needs to be the correct level for the engine - i.e. EU2 or EU3.

As long as the ECU is matched to the engine, and coded to the 10As unit the engine will start.

I think mostly because there easier to come by and a bit cheaper.

I know that it'll make things a bit harder in terms of wiring but it is quite possible right? :?

If i'm connecting the TD5 dico ECU to a TDI dash board what will happen, will it work at all or just work all the wrong way round?? :?

Cheers, Maria
