will a 2.5NA diesel engine go into my s3?
« on: March 05, 2007, 00:12:47 »
am looking for a new engine and have been offered a 2..5NA diesel from someone on this forum. the engine is from a 90, and so the questions is, will it go in easily, and will it marry up to my s3 gearbox?

anybody done it?

help  would be muchly appreciated!

Yes it can be done fairly easily. Some minor modifications are needed and little bit of welding. I have done this conversion myself, as well as the TD engine in a series 3. There are several threads covering the work, so a quick search should supply all the info you need.

Just done it on my series 3, with help as I'm spanner shy but it all went ok.

The only bit that could be a pian if you haven't got access to a welder is moving one of the engine mounts.

I think the only thing you need to do is move the battery and possibly remove the battery tray

i used a sherpa engine(virtualy the same)
but the 90 engine will bolt on the the gearbox with no problem,
may have to swop the clutch plates
although you will have to move the drivers side engine mount to allow for the fuel pump

you will also have to chop or relocathe the battery tray and battery
(i moved mine to under the passenger seat)but in front of the front grille is a good place in a battery box
if your replacing a petrol engine you can use the 12v feed from the coil to power the pump solonoid
and you will have to make up a timed relay for the glow plugs (easy i used one out of a deisel escort)an dyou will have to use a deisel downpipe too
but if your replacing a deisel engine that should be easier still
but other than that its a piece of cake

it took me 2 full days to do mine with a little help from my mate

the battey tray can stay were it is all you have to do cut one leg off ( inner most ). gear box bolts straight up just use series 3 clutch plate, and the only other thing is unbolt the off side engine bracket of the engine cut the engine mount from the chassis weld the original engine bracket unside down to the chassis and thats it ,it took me  one day by myself to fit the engine so it easy :D  ps you need to wire up the fuel cut off from ignition side. cheers eddie. if stuck just pm me .

The main exterior difference between the Sherpa and Defender engine is the the position of the injector pumps. The sherpa engine has an Injector pump high up (hence the fitting of an idler gear for the the timing belt to ensure sufficient wrap around the cam sprocket). When fitting a Sherpa 2.5 N/A engine, there is no need to alter the drivers (O/S) chassis engine mount - due to this higher location of the inj pump.
On a 90/110 N/A or TD engine that was factory fitted, the inj pump is lower (no idler wheel), and because of this the standard mounts will not fit (at all). If you just lower the engine - the injector pump will sit on the chassis engine mount quite a while before you could even do up the rubber mounting nut.  Any chance of some pictures of the chassis/engine mounts, as what you are saying ain't quite right in my opinion.

As trustyrusty said, had to swop the thermostat housing for the one off the 2 .25 as the 2.5 had a rightangle, the s2.25 fitted straight on so could use the same coolent hose.

Apart from that no probs.

p.s. see this tread about accelerator cable rather than the linkage http://forums.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?t=38692&highlight=accelerator+linkage
