Can anyone tell me how many splines a "classic" axle would have, is it 10 or 24?

up to early 1990's they were 10

at some point disco/def/rrc changed to 24 afaik

Generally accepted as the introduction of the 300TDi/300 series or softdash for the Range Rover.  But if anyone knows different please say.

There are other differences in the history of the Range Rover classic axle that don't affect the Disco, which was pretty much the EFi standard Rangie with a new body.

Most notable are the rear axle damper mounts and the 'imperial' bearings used in the diffs, which have different filler plugs IIRC.  The props were also thinner on the older RRC and the UJs smaller.

On the front the 6 bolt swivels on earlier cars and did someone say the early ones had bigger CV joints too?

Later, after the introduction of Disco came the ABS style axles with the oil seal inside the stub axle, driveshaft incorperated into the cv and different bearings in botht he swivel and the CV support.

mines got 24 spline shafts ,i found out when i needed a rear diff.I now need a front one as its whining badly. :?

Is yors a very late hard-dash then?

Yeah,its not a soft dash but had air suspension ,tracksion control ,abs etc.
Its a 94 L reg. My diffs are 24 spline and the out put shafts and props are 4 bolts.I was told there is a rarer one with 24 spline and 3 bolt prop so glad i didnt need one of them.
If someone has a 24 spline ,give me a shout as i need one.

I don't know when the 24 spline was introduced on the hard dash then but the soft dash 3 bolt is for the rear end.  My LSE has one but Julies TDi doesn't, it might have been changed though.  The 3 bolt I bought came from a P38 which is where most spare ones will come from I recon.
