URGENT!! :- Auto Gearbox
« on: February 25, 2007, 16:46:37 »
Right, i need to know if me auto box has kicked the bucket.  Driving along earlier and it was changing up and down the gears for no reason then it lost drive.  Then for a very short while it would run but only in low box and even then not in reverse, now it wont run at all.

Does this mean the end or is it something else on the drive train?

Its a 1989 3.9EFI with the weird 4x4 setup where you only select hi and low box and not difflock.

Cheers

Dan

I am very sorry about this news.

If this is the same tranny we were discussing last week, did the fluid level drop again?  If the thing still registers full fluid at idle in Neutral with the transmission warm, and it still has lost Drive, then the clutch materials in the tranny are shot.  If that is the case, it is time for a rebuild or a replacement.

Or, if the transmission fluid level has dropped again, refill it again and look for that leak.  (OK, find and fix the leak before filling it, because you may well have to drain to fix a leaking transmission cooler hose or a leaking transmission cooler, or a leaking fitting, or a leaking gasket or seal.)

I wish you better luck,
Scott

remember all that cursing and swearing when we took the motor out of that white one.....

well double that and you about there

It is possible to remove the props, disconnect the handbrake, undo all the mountings, remove the crossmember and then drop it on the floor... :x  :x

Then find your goolies

cos it's an absolute "fatherless child" of a job

Refitting is simply a reversal of the removal procedure, as the Lord Haynes would say.....but you can't drop something upwards and they are bleedin heavy!

Personally I would sell the dog and then pay someone to do it....I'd rather inject EP90 into my eyes that attempt another....

Take out the centre console and stick an engine hoist in through the door.
