Transplant time. Bought a 200Tdi today. Now all I've got to do is fit the [questionable thing]! Seem to remember there was a few guides on t'internet to show me how to do it. Best get googling. Wish me luck!

I know Redline Mike and Miniman have done this a few times so any tips would be most gratefully received, guys!

Incidentally, the guy I bought it from (Landyloony) has a smart 110 up for sale too. See here Here's a plug for ya mate!

Busy day. Started off degreasing the tdi and finished with removal of the TD. So that's the easy part done. Now the hard part of fitting in the new engine.

PS - Them bellhousing bolts are a b@stard!

No...

the easy bit is fitting the engine

the hard bit is making it work

exhaust is a ****
IC & water pipes are a ****

use the TD mounts oon the TDI & it falls straight in the hole,

Has anyone on here made their own downpipe? I ask because I think over £135 is a tad much! I have the disco downpipe but I don't have any other bits of pipe hanging around. Will this do?

The only tricky bit is the exhaust down pipe

intercooler and water hose's are simlple just cut them on a straight bit insert some metal pipe and secure with more jubilee clips-not the prettiest but ,meh! who care about pretty on a landy engine

You might want to get some oil cooler pipes made up though -it is possible to extend them the same way as water hoses but how long they'd last is anyones guess

Simon

i made my own downpipe out the cast elbow to allow the fitment of a modded disco front pipe, only thing i found was after a hard landing offroad the exhaust would drop off

as yours is a TD to start with reuse the oil cooler pipes

the radiator is in the same place & the oil filter housing is in the same place

if they dont fit (they should) get a pair of defender tdi oil cooler pipes as they go straighty in

So if i bought a disco 200 tdi engine and bought an exhaust from steve parkers, the it would be pretty simple afterwards? There is also another kit to convert but its like £300 - odd quid  :o  !!! Need to do it on a budget of £600 and then replace the gearbox!

UPDATE

Engine is in. Starting on wiring and pipes. Few (lots!) of questions...

I have a few thick cables on the passenger side. Two pairs of brown thick cables crimped together on a circular connector and another thick cable and circular connector. Should they all go on the copper terminal on the starter solenoid?

Also, the two thick cables and the thin one that go to the alternator. Where? I gather the W terminal is for a rev counter?

The fuel connector on the back of the injector pump (ie nearest to the cab) is a fuel return yes?

I'm using the old TD filter.  I've got a fuel line IN from the tank to the lift pump. Then OUT from the lift pump to IN on the filter. Then OUT from the filter to the front of the injector pump. The other IN and OUT on the filter are now blanked off as is the the connection on the top. Am I right in thinking that I can remove the banjo that fitted the top of the filter and connection that went to the fuel 'rail' and just connect the RETURN pipe to the connection on the rear of the injector pump?

So far so good.

Now the power steering is confusing me. I gather I can connect the low pressure from the TD reservoir to the pump using the old TD pipe but the high pressure pipe is a different fitting? I have the steering box from the Disco but am unsure if I need it. It appears that the pipework has been cut anyway so i don't see a benefit. Do I have to go to Pirtek or is there an easier way?

Downpipe on order as is all new brakes. Also going to have to order new radiator. Grrrrr.

Last question. If I presume I need to go to Pirtek for power steering pipe the only other thing I think I need to buy is the airbox to turbo, turbo to intercooler and intercooler to inlet manifold pipes. Is this correct? Where is the best (and by best I mean cheap and quick!) place to get the pipes from?

Cheers guys! Sorry for all the questions, but I need it running for Saturday!

Simon.

Latest update:

Loads of bits arrived today. Exhaust downpipe is in. New clutch slave cylinder fitted and pipes rerouted. Wires on to starter. Fuel return connected. Low pressure power steering pipe connected. Radiator ordered. Thanks to mmgemini for the help and advice tonight!

Taken tomorrow off. List of things to do is massive!

1.) Get high pressure power steering pipe altered at Pirtek or similiar.
2.) Attach power steering pipe
3.) Re-engineer radiator bottom bracket.
4.) Swap oil cooler connections onto new radiator.
5.) Fit radiator and intercooler.
6.) Fit oil cooler pipes.
7.) Finish exhaust connections.
8.) Sort out air pipes.
9.) Sort out water pipes
10.) Re-attach heater pipes
11.) Re-attach glow plug wire
12.) Re-attch air filter housing
13.) Buy connectors for the back of the alternator
14.) Fill water system and bleed
15.) Fill power steering system and bleed
16.) Fill clutch system and bleed.

Then hopefully it'll be a case of reconnecting the battery, starting it, flushing and changing oil and all filters, putting the interior bits back together and putting the bonnet and front end back on.

Once that's done I've got new discs and pads, new shoes and drums and new handbrake to fit.

It's gonna be a busy day.

It's in and it runs although there seems to be a whistling noise. Also it's running very hot despite the fact that I swapped the temp sender from the TD. Sits just before the red but doesn't move. Doesn't sound good does it?!

Anyway, I'll worry about it tomorrow cos i'm off to bed. Night, night.
