What effect does regular water crossing have on a standard winch set-up.
I want to fit a new front winch, but I'm concerned about water damage to electrics etc. Is there lots of maintenance/cleaning involved? :(bigangry):

well
no winch is 100% waterproof
personally i have my solenoids up in the engine bay high up,hav the motor casing & ends sealed onto the winch housing & also the winch itself sealed as best i can & it still needs checking fairly regularly,if im doing a lot of wading & winching out of gittery holes then a strip down n check is called for

Yes, if you want the winch to last.
Best thing is to strip the winch when you get it, put silicone sealer around the where the motor and gearbox joins the drum.
The worst is muddy water, as the earth contained in it will soon eat bearings and the armature of the motor.
After a days drenching the winch should be stripped, cleaned, new grease put in the gearbox and then rebuilt.

the only way to be sure is to strip and clean after every deep water venture. if you dont, expect problems.
serious modifications can be done to some winches to improve there water resistance tho.

huskey's and 8274's are really the only waterproofish winches around in standard format, altho both of mine now are fully wet proofed and work fully submerged in water
the epi9 can be made waterproofed, motor end so it can be run underwater, but i had to alloy weld the drumsupport and add a breather to the motor, however the gearbox couldnt be made waterproof so i just reguarly stripped, cleaned and packet full of 2-4-c marine grease

T-max outback, sold as watertight, definitely not.
like its been said already, boat grease, silicon sealant, and a regular strip to check internal condition.
I now dont dunk the winch unless its very neccesary, it dont do em any good.

Another option for a waterproof setup is either a hydraulic winch or a mechanical PTO winch.
The PTO ones are getting hard to get hold of, but they do still surface occasionally. I had one fitted to my old Series 3. What a fantastic piece of kit. Even managed to recover a bogged Unimog with a single line pull after a Huskey winch stalled on a double line pull trying to recover it. :)
