Transfer box won't stay in high range

All was well this morning. Drove from the house up to the road in low box. Drove through the gate (opened it first obviously!), selected high range and drove down to work.

Drove back from work in high range, got to the track, put it into low range, no problems. Later, again at the road, tried to select high range, and the lever won't pull all the way back. It's coming just far enough back from the neutral position to actually get drive to the wheels, and will stay in place, until I hit a bit of a bump or cross a cattle grid, at which point it jumps back to neutral. Can get round it by holding the lever in place, but this isn't really ideal!

Anyone got any ideas as to what could be causing it? (Please don't say it's a new transfer box job! :P)

couple of things  :lol:
take the cover off from inside the cab so you can look down onto the gear/transfere box
now it might just need adjusting....
look at the arm that goes to the trans box at the end of it theres 2 13mm nuts 1 either side of the selector fork off the trans box see if these have backed off or moved any,
undo it if it aint moved and remove the arm, put into low, undo nut then pull into high,
now grip the selector with pliers and see if itll move as it should
if it doesnt feel right, undo the ring of bolts around the housing and pull it up, follow the arm accross and there will be a cam knida arm, this is secured by a 6mm alan key grub screw which have a habbit of coming undone  :shock:
just retighten it and refit
or it could just be a clump of mud trapped inbertween linkages
but lt230's hardly go wrong

Cheers, I'll have a look at it tomorrow in daylight. Just had to drive down to work in low box, as even whilst holding the lever it was dropping out high range.

is the lever sloppy, very stiff or jerky/notchy ?

Other than it not actually going all the way into high, it feels no different to normal. Doesn't seem overly stiff or anything, about the same as my mates 300 series with a currently working transfer box :P

all itll be is adjustment then o would have thought
now off top of my head to adjust high range you need to winde the nuts up the rod but dont go far go a half a turn at a time and try it
if no joy wip the top housing off and check the grub screw

Hi All

I have the same problem, only with low range, and have the shed booked in for a recon t box.

I have heard of this grub screw, but haven't been able to find it..........  but then I am fairly pants at nuts and bolts and the like.

Can anyone explain in words of few syllables how to find this fabled grub screw and how to fix it please??

Pictures would of course be great too?

Big thanks to thebiggreenthing, got it sorted today. Was the two nuts needing adjusting. Quite an involved job altogether really for an idiot like myself. Had to take out the centre console, then remove the soundproofing around the levers, then actually find the linkage. And then I had the wonderful job of trying to get hands into the gap and a spanner onto the nuts and leave myself enough room to actually make adjustments! I though the upper nut was difficult, until I tried to adjust the lower one! (Couldn't even find the lower one at first!).

Anyway, all done and dusted now! And I have that wonderful sense of achievement, my first mechanical repair on my Disco :D

right
remove the gear sticks and peel the rubber cover off
now remove the plastic center console
you should now be faced with a alloy cover with pop rivits around it holding it down drill the poprivits out and remove the cover
you can now see the transfere box and maint gearbox
ontop of the transfer box there is a rectangle alloy casing where the selector arm goes to
its bolted down by 6 (afink) 13mm hex head m8 bolts
u need to undo these o and the 14mm breather union, and the linkage itself
and then you can remove the housing
inside the housing on the selector shaft at the end is a arm on the arm there is a 6mm alan key grub screw, and thats the f***** that backs itself off so often
but 1st what exactly is the problem with your box ? secribe in full maybe we can help out and its something simple, as lt230's dont really go wrong, ive just blown 1 center diff up  :oops:

Well.......  it has jumped out of low range every now and again for ever.  Lever will not move sideways to engage diff lock....... imagine its the linkage seized, but lots of WD40 and BFH hasn't shifted it.  

But just recently it has been getting whinier on overun, and now it will not hold high range (pops out on decel) and low range has just disappeared.  The lever goes way  forward and way back in a very sloppy fashion, but there is nothing at the low range end.....  it does feel like there is a very slight 'click' as the lever approaches the radio, but there is no drive.  There is drive in high, but the lever has to be all the way back (with the gate removed) before it engages.

At the mo I have stripped out the sound deadening foam, and removed the rubber gaiter and the gate around the lever, and it is held in high with a big bungee around the rear of the centre console.  I have researched it a bit, and have been looking for this grub screw, but didn't realise it was under the lever housing mechanism.

ill take some piccys of a transfer box for u tomorra and flirt the housing off and show you what your looking at
whining they all do, just more evident without sound proofing  :lol: , its just a land rover  :shock:
change the oil in the box see what comes out
as for the sloppy lever yes that be the grub screw
difflock if it aint been used for a while itll be siezed so u need get underneath with a whackometer  :lol:  (hammer) and nock it into difflock
ill get you some pics t morra as i have a transfer box in pieces atm  :lol:

Good news if it is the grub screw............  save me £500 that I haven't got for a fitted recon unit.

Have tried to get under it for the difflock whacking at the box end.........  but I don't think I have enough length, or joints in my arms!

Right, I was stud at the lights let the clutch up and there was a bang. No drive in any gear high or low box and no difflock, Could this be the transfer box. Booking it in to morrow for repair and seeing the bank maneger.

before booking it into a garage, drail the oils off the gearbox and transfer box, give you a insight as which one has died  :lol:

I checked the grub screw.........  not slipped.

I have now had a recon box fitted by my tame mechanic and when he drained the old t box oil most of the internals came out with it!!

It was also filled with ATF, not EP 80/90!!  (not by me)....  its no wonder it gave up the unequal struggle!

He also had to fit a replacement lever, box and linkages as mine were seized solid despite being on the bench with heat, BFH's and penetrating fluid.

Anyway..........  the truck is now really quiet and smooth, and high, low and diff lock works as it should.......  am chuffed but poor. (no change there).

Well, last night I had visions of a large bill from the garage. For the last couple of days it's been jumping out of high range again. After work last night I went to put it into low range at the start of our lane, and it hardly moved into the low position :(

Then had a sudden wave of inspiration this morning. Stripped the console out, and discovered (luckily!) that I was right. The 2 nuts on the linkage had slackened off, leaving a ridiculous amount of slack in the lever travel. Tightened 'em right up, and woohoo, works a dream again.
