Alternator
« on: February 01, 2007, 13:36:20 »
I inherited a Rangerover V8 last year and finally have some time to look at it.

First thing to fix is the alternator.
The old one had a snapped off terminal stud so I replaced it with a newer one only to find I still have a battery warning light on the dashboard despite having 14 volts hitting the battery.

The newer alternator has 4 connections on it though.
Ive connected
B+ to the battery, fat wire off to the battery
W  Brown and yellow wire to a terminal post
?  Single white wire to a spade connector

One free smaller terminal post has nothing to connect to and I have no rev counter.

I hope all this means something to somebody, the only haynes manual I have at present is for an SD1 V8 which I suspect has completely different wiring.
Watch out theres a tigger about!

The new unit is a Delco Remy DRA3588

A bit of googling shows the W connection as a tacho output

Anyone have a wiring diagram for an 89 V8 to hand ?

Need to know which of the skinny wires does what

OIne connector should be left unless you have a split charge system IIRC, assuming it's still a compatible alternator.

You need only 2 wires to get the thing charging, the charge wire (battery) and the excitation wire or warning lamp wire.  Start by getting these 2 right.

The 3rd wire is for the alternator and the olast one can have a supressor on it IIRC

If you PM me with an email address I should be able to find one which I can scan in and email for you. Might take a couple of days to dig it out the workshop though.
