Buying a Maverick
« on: January 31, 2007, 12:17:52 »
Hi everyone, total newbie to 4x4 world Wizza here looking for some advice re buying a  maverick as a second car. Mrs Wizza and I have got our eyes on a couple of motors . One is  1998 FORD MAVERICK 4X4 2.7 TURBO D  GLSLWB 7seater  P reg, leather seats , a/c 117k miles , running boards etc , the other 1998 S Reg FORD Maverick 2.7 TD GLS 99k miles,a/c cloth interior , tinted windows, no running boards .

What sort of price do you think they should be , they both look v well kept. What else should I be asking and looking for.?

We are not frequent car buyers so we're not up to speed with anything other than using a Maverick car review check list.

Basically we're lacking confidence in  what possible hidden things to check.

I looked at a friends M reg and it had water in the passenger footwell, so I've discounted that one......

Grateful for any advice.

Regards Wizza

P.s I have posted this in the Bar area as well

hi,

well as the mav is basically a nissan terrano 2  i would expect to pat around £3500. a good place to check is ebay, there are fixed price classified ads listed many from dealers.

the mark 2 version from 96 has twin head and fog lights above the bumper and the diesel is aa tdi of 125 bhp. they represent good value as usually are still classed as group 10 by the insurers like the mark 1s which offered 100bhp.

the intercooler is a dead give away as the bonnet has a scoop in it. the engine is 'bullet proof' with gear driven cam, not the quietest but will run for ever and same as found in black cabs.

can recommend the nissan and ford maverick 4x4 owners club

at

www.nissan4x4ownersclub.co.uk

had our 96 for 2 years and never missed a beat, 22000 miles on just passed 111000 miles. its a people carrier, caravan tug and off roader!

you won't regret buying one.

Thanks everyone for the tips. We took the plunge and bought a 97 P reg
2.7 LWB GLS, 117K miles, leather seats , fully loaded  for £2000.   Found it on ebay, Mrs Wizza went up to Hull to collect and drive it back, over 300 miles. Lovely motor, well pleased.

Couple of things need tweaking like the interior light not coming on, the small roof aerial could do with renewing, heater could be warmer.

Richard, like you  we are all looking forward to having lots of fun in it!

Regards

Wizza

just be wary of the front freewheeling hubs, they are notoriously bad and very prone to breakages.Milner off road at matlock do a manual locker to fit the mavvy and arent badly priced either..

I have a 95 2.7 td swb mavvy and have nowt but problems with the hubs..
