The garage seem to want to take ur pants down!  id get it back and get someone else to look at it.

if your hub seal is leaking drain the oil and stick some one shot grease in.  pikey, but it will help (unless it already got one shot in)

i do everything on our cars, appart from once when i snapped a front spring going to work (quite common on a 306 gti6) which resulted in font wheels pointing forward and no chance of steering.
So blagged my mates AA and took it to garage cause i was a tad annoyed at the time!  resulted in a £170 bill for changing 2 springs and a car that now sits lob sided cause they probably used cheapo springs.  They even charged me for the spring compressors they snapped trying to remove the old spring   had to pay otherwise i wouldnt get keys back!!

never took a car to any garage again appart from MOT, rather spend the extra time doing it myself instead of being raped by local garage!

removing a 4' steering rack thru a 18" x 3" hole took me a while when i broke that, but i wouldnt be beaten!

I changed my own axle, but it's a heavy beasty.  Lift the car as high as possible then rest it on axle satnds, drop the rad arms out of the chassis, springs andparhard rod, all that then drag it out on top of your trolley jack.  If you've got a mate standing by then even better.

But that sounds like billy to me, stripped thread my bum.  If the female threads are gone you could stlii have it helicoiled for about £40, probably in situ, or swap the steering knuckle (has the calliper flange on it and is drilled for the stub axle).

And £300 for another axle, is it Gold plated?  You can get a recon one for not much more than that can't you?
