Landrover 110 station wagon
« on: January 21, 2007, 10:58:19 »
hi guys i am thinking about purchasing a landrover defender 110 station wagon. i was wondering which engine is best the 200tdi or the 300tdi and whats the difference between the two? also i was wondering the power differences between the two and also the fuel economy, what can i expect a 3ootdi to do to the gallon? also is the 200tdi more efficient in a sation wagon?
your knowledge would be appreciated cheers. p.s which is the most reliable!?

Basically the two are the same. Same body just very minor differences.

The 200Tdi isn't as refined   as the 300Tdi engine.
The 200Tdi had rear drum brakes fitted except for the very last builds when they were changed to the 300Tdi discs.

MPG.
Well I have a 300Tdi station wagon. Fully loaded  Well overloaded if you must know. That was 3,400Kg. Roof rack with jerry cans on it. A top box. Travelling Botswana, Namibia and South Africa we managed 26mpg. That on the krap Southern African diesel.

Seating.
Depending on when you took your driving test dependes if you can drive the 12 seater. You can always take out one or both the side facing bench seats.
The second row of seats can be 60/40 or three separate seats. How they work out what fits when I don't know.

Reliability.
That depends on the previous owner. A well looked after Defender will last a long time. Engine oil needs changing spot on service milege and the timing belts on both engines need changing at the correct mileage.
Most of the horror stories you'll hear should have been done by now.
Both engines are reliable. My 300Tdi had 175,000 miles to its credit. first registered  Jan 1996. I hear tell of those that have travelled well in excess of 250,000 miles.

If you need to ask more please do..........

Thanks alot for the info mike., Do you reccomend a 300tdi over a 200tdi? blimey 26mpg fully loaded is bloody brilliant to be fair. Yeh im only 17 so ill just use it as a 5 seater, ive already got a 90 but i just went in my mates 110 and its jus so much nicer and smoother and handles better so i was converted. My landrover i use for work so i was hoping the seats fold flat? which they do dont they? as in floor flat? so then it means i havea bigger van thn what my 90 is. What insurance group arethey? Where you from? Thanks alot forthe advice its much appreciated. will

hi my 17 year old buddy, nice to see another yungun. im 18 btw :D

i drive a 200 tdi, and would pick the 200 over the 300 anyday of the week. 200tdi is like a tractor engine, it will keep going and going and going. i love em.

any more info, let me know. i am in petersfield, hampshire, what about you?

In my opinion the 200 is the slightly better engine as in simplicity but for the whole motor it has to be a 300 because of the many advantages is has e.g: disc rear axle, gearbox, engine location ect..

When you say the 110 is smother what are you comparing it against?

A 300TDi 110 is bound to be much smother than a 2.5naturly asmatic but if you have had your 90 a while and have fettled it to your specs then swapping to whole new motor may be more costly than say putting a new engine in yours.

If you have msn add me and i will talk more if you like.

Will.
if you you can make it i can break it.

Personally I'd go for the 300Tdi. The engine isn't as agricultural as the 200Tdi   Notice "not as" That's comparing engine for engine.

Now to add a little bit.
I run mine with an Alli-Sport intercooler and pump tweak. Also I've got the large center exhaust box removed.
The intercooler is a direct replacement where the standard Labd Rover one fitted.
With both these mods I get a lot,and I mean a lot, more low down torque.
Also before I had these done I needed to drop into top [4th] gear to keep to 30mph in the town limit.
Now I travel in fifth gear at 30mph.
Also I have a GKN overdrive fitted.

I see some of the youngest are talking to one of the oldest on here  :D

i have a 200tdi which is my daily drive & also my weekend toy,ive got it well tweaked at the mo (141Bhp at the flywheel up from 107 standard) with a big cooler fitted, custom exhaust & pump tweaked,on the road it goes like stink but does low 20's mpg on a long run it does about 26/27 mpg

Looking at fitting a 300tdi simply cos its more refined, has a better charging system & you can get 176Bhp out them with the right tweaks

P.s im only 21 aswell,had it since i was 19

so basically for simplicity 200tdi but for everythin else a 300tdi...got it.
Anything else i shopuld know? any personal problems or experiences with the 110? What should i expect to pay for a 1993 110 300tdi engine average condition and miles?

...and more.  A 110 300TDi CSW will go for 7k quite easily.
