Hello. I'm new here. Been reading all the previous threads about tyres. Thanks to all the contributers.. I may have made my mind up about what set I need to buy already. Getting sick of getting stuck in the mud. I'm finding the bog standard radials that came with when I bought my 110 TD5 are really only good for growing tatties in my situation.

Need something that handles alright on the road and farm use off the road stuff. Was thinking of going for BFG Mud Terrain after reading the other posts.. plus I see alot of local defenders with the same. This a good choice?

What size? I think my 110 is at normal suspension and want a size that will go on straight away without any other enhancements or mods.

What air pressure too? And what's the sitch with lowering the pressure in certain terrain? Can anybody explain?

BFG's are good tyres and will last you a long time.
I would also consider General Grabber MT's as another option. They have same on and off road capabilities as the BFG but can work out about £20 a corner cheaper if you look around.  :wink:

As Mikee said, 235x85R16 would be a good swap and will go straight on. If you want something a little wider but roughly the same diameter then there's the 265x75R16 but I would check on the rim width for these if you intend putting them on the standard wheels.
You will also have to check the turning circle once fitted and make sure they don't catch the radius arms on full lock. If they do then it's just a case of altering the length of the steering stops.

As for tyre pressures, it's been a while since I ran 235x85R16's but IIRC I ran then at about 30psi for the road and 22psi off road.
The reason for the reduced pressure off road is so that you get a larger footprint and better floatation on softer ground.

BFG MT's are an excellent choice and they handle very well on the road and preform off road too.

Not the cheapest but you do get what you pay for, as for size my personal preference is 265/75 over the 235/85 but both will go on no probs.

If you are going to use it a lot off road the BFGs suffer cuts and damage long before they wear out of tread.  My personal strategy is to go for the cheapest reasonable option as I have never worn out the tread on a Land Rover tyre before I have cut the sidewall, lost a tread block or punctured it beyond repair.

Had BFG Muds 265/75/R16 on mine for the last three years and no probs on or off road  :lol: .... and they fill the wheel arches nicely too!  8)

I've never yet needed to lower the tyre pressures as the 265's are a lot wider than the standard tyre so float pretty well anyway. Reducing tyre pressures is only really essential if you are doing some desert driving.

Yeah, I know it's not white and it's not a 90 but my last one was :-)

thanks for the replies! so, looks like I'm leaning to the BFG MT's 265x75/R16

It's difficult to read, but I think the rim size says, 73x16x35. Will the 265x75/R16 fit my rims?

The tyres I have on now are General Grabber TR 235x85 and an odd Radial one. Will it be quite an extraordinary difference I'll see in my muddy fields & tracks then? It's so soggy here just now I'm feared to drive it back down my muddy track for gettin' stuck again. Hopefully, I could have the new tyres on by next week.

point taken. I'm more used to driving in heavy snow rather than mud. Perhaps I'll need to take my pal up on some defender off road lessons too -- after I get my new mud tyres of course!  :D

With snow you should be ok then as mud is pretty similar, slidey, unpredictable!

I'm not sure on the tyre size you posted though, what rims have you got? Are they alloys or steels?

No, just narrows down what wheels they are for sizing.

Are they the boost style?? Do you have any pics cos then we can say if the 265's will fit, i ran them on my Boost alloys no problems :)

You could fit 255/85's wich would give better lock i think on standard wheels and also be that bit taller.

Yes 265/75's will fit.

They look like the standard 110 deep dish alloys, similar to boosts (altho i could be wrong!)

Your best bet for the MT's might be somewhere like Quickfit as they have 30% off 4 tyres at the moment, thats how i got mine last year :)

265/85/16's will fit your alloys and will look superb. i would recomend an off road or 4x4 specialist local to you. many of the side of the road outfits are not so good at the larger tire and wheel sizes. hope it all comes together for you!

went to Kwik Fit to check price on the BFG MT's 265x75xR16 and they want £104 each... I can do much better than this on the net, (maybe I ought to tell them and I might get a deal or price match?) They also inform me they will fit my alloy wheels at size 7Jx16x35.

Hi there, i am in the wrong forum as i run a discovery however i am really interested in hearing from people with experience from running BF Goodrich Mud terrains.

I have used General Grabber AT2 on my suzuki and they seem supurb off road, a total transformation from the more road biased tyres it came with.

I have now purchased a discovery for on and off road use and am unsure what to fit as a great deal of MT's are unsuitable for road use however people and reviews i have read seem to suggest the BF goodrich tyres are reasonable on road.

Is this true, what about in the wet and what sort of road noise do you hear, i suppose it is less of an issue in a defender as opposed to a disco!

As I said earlier, I run General Grabber MT's on my Disco and don't have any problems on the road in the wet or dry. They act like normal road tyres and I don't notice any noise from them either.

The same can be said for the BFG MTs I had on my 90. Good road holding in the wet & dry with low noise levels.
The BFG seems a harder waring tyre than the Grabber MT but having used both, their performance seems very similar. Although the Grabber MT is a little cheaper.  :wink:

Obviously my disco has 235/70 16.

Yep, I've only used 235/85R16s which were on my 90 and the ones I have on the Disco now which are 33/12.5R15, and they would need a bit of modification to get them in.  :D

I've not bought my tyres yet.. but, as I discussed w/ a friend about what tyres.. and mentioned BFG MT.. he says I'd be lucky to get up past 45 mph on the motorway w/ these... huh??? tell me that he's talkin rubbish.
