Uh, Gatescarth Pass, as in, used by Kendel Mountian Rescue - with a number of 110 ambulances?

I know they'll be exempt from any TRO, but.......

It's not vehicle length that causes the problem on the Pass, but driving technique.  :?

Just something worth considering

Cheers

Defender:
Driving technique does come into it, but you can't legislate for this. The fact remains that the longer wheelbase vehicles are causing problems as some of the hairpin bends are very tight & very steep.
The guidlines will be made clearer that only the most experienced drivers should use this route, but this can't realisticly be written into the TRO conditions. Who's going to decide what 'Off Road' or 4x4 qualifications are deemed suitable before using this route & how many people actually have some form of formal qualifications?
As I see it, it's better to work with the National Park on this and come up with a compromise (which I think we have), rather than a complete ban.
This route is under close scrutiny from all parties including many anti groups & I believe the government are watching the situation as this is ground breaking use of a TRO. Most people see a TRO as a complete closure but this does not have to be the case.

And yes, the Mountain Rescue are probably exempt from the TRO as they will be allowed to access the fells.

Jonno:
Just had a tape measure out to the Niva for the wheelbase measurement, all other measurements seem to be in the owners handbook. These measurements cover the Niva range - Cossack and Hussar in standard trim.

Wheelbase ........................  2.2m   (86.5" approx)
Overall length.....................  3.74m (147.25")
Overall width inc mirrors...... 1.68m  (66")
Height ............................... 1.64m   (64.5")

Kerb Weight ...................... 1210Kg  (2662 lb)
Gross weight ..................... 1610Kg   (3542 lb)

Hope that's of some help to you Chris
