nice new big intercooler

But those intercoolers are designed to work like that... Land Rover ones aren't.

I must conquer with the Donkey :-)

The plain Jane A3 fitted with the 1.8 turbocharged engine is fitted with just one intercooler.

When they wanted to upgrade the performance and due to the fact of very limited space they decided to fit a twin intercooler system and it does work very well.

Fitting a larger intercooler is of course a much better option but when space is limited a twin setup (or two stage as Allard and the others call it) is a very good option.

The pipework is extended in length but upping the wastegate operational pressure takes care of the problem. Differences are so marginal that I do not think it is worth doing it.

I have fitted a full frontal intercooler bought from Alan Allard back in 1996 in my ex CT Discovery 200Tdi and it does make a difference.

Having bought a two stage intercooler to add to my second camel (again a Discovery 200Tdi but 1994 evented) I found out that it can not be fitted because of the skid plate and Husky winch positioned where the second intercooler is supposed to be mounted.

I have the unit available for sale if you wish (it was bought secondhand, it is an Allisport made one and is for 300Tdi Discos but it is the same for 200Tdi engined ones also)

Take care
Pantelis
