Me mate has a series and we were talking aboot upgrading the brakes.
(he is doing the engine and chassis the noo)
Servo seemed too much farting aboot so I mentioned about cutting diamonds into the brake linings, (shoes).
any views on this?
I used to do it on me bikes when off roading and seemd to work good at dislplacing the water.

on a series motor ?

To be honest I'd have thought it was a dangerous idea, the main problem is not water but simply a lack of effective braking surface or air in the system.

Whilst a servo etc might seem a lot of hassle, it's not *that* much work and does help.  As does putting 109" Series Three drums on the front, they're dual line (ISTR) and have bigger drums.

you should be able to pick them up for reasonably little money...  think I have a set and a servo kicking about somewhere....  although it's not a job for the faint hearted...

you might just be better off making sure they're adjusted and bled properly.  Cleaning and replacing the drums will help, as will making sure the wheel cylinders are in good working order.

The brakes work ok normally.
He uses it off road and after the puddles the stopping distance increases somewhat.
Now, something you have said triggered me mind.
he is having a new chassis put in her in Jan with new pipes etc, I wonder if he could do the servo upgrade at that stage.

That's quite normal...   Standard procedure is a bit of gentle left foot braking to clear out the drums / dry the shoes once you've been through.

Whatever you do, don't simply stick an 11" front end on without changing the master cylinder somehow......

mathinks the holes are bigger somehow in the LWB m/cyl which could lead to :oops: if you ain't carefull.......

imagine this...
1st pump - pedal to floor
2nd pump - pedal almost to floor
3rd pump - front brakes
4th pump - all brakes

Now try that when someone just pulled out on you :shock:  :shock:  :shock:  :shock:  :shock:  :o  :o

mmmmm  I'd go for the servo and 109 master cylinder if I were you..

There is a conversion kit to disc brakes available, I think its a dutch company does it, not sure on the price now, was about 2-300 pounds, off the top of my head. But you would still need a servo in the system to run the upgrade

i actually tried this on my old series and although you have bigger drums there just aint enough fluid in the system, its more of a combination of 2nd and 4th scenario.

Use the Zeus disc conversion - no servo needed.  See the Aus distributor's site for details http://www.yican.com.au/DBrakes/DBrakes.html

I've done a couple of DIY conversions using 4 pot Hilux calipers and they work pretty well unboosted so long as you don't use stupidly hard brake pads.

i learned to left foot brake in a diesal fiesta & transfered the technique to my clio (dsnt really work,back end steps out b4 it under steers) & its handy doin it with the 90 cos it confuses those in the bowlers when they catch me  :lol:
