One of the few things I know of is to check for oil on the top of the cylinder head where the common rail injection system connects to the cylinder head, the wiring may crack here and cause problems Ihave not heard much else to look for except general wear and tear.

OK......
from the top
oil in injector loom spreading to the ECU giving a miss & poor performance,
front shock bushes going after 40k (rattles about for n aft)
ACE pipes leaking along with ACE block
check the flywheel has either been changed (recall) or its outwith the batch with the dodgy flywheels
rear brake calipers can stick
fuel leaks from filter housing/filter bottom & fuel block on engine,(crawl underneath & look up at the starter,if its damp/dripping with fuel then fuel block needs changed)
abs/HD/TC lights on,if all 3 are on its a sensor thats spat the dummy, can change the sensor but 9/10 need a new hub @ circa £200
steering box's leaking,Tbox & G box leaks ALA disco 1 & defenders
if theres a knock/clunk from underneath could be either ARB bushes or the shock bushes
cant think of anything else ...
also if it hesitates in 4th/5th accelrating from 45mph upwards in 4th & 65 upwards in 5th & feels like its lacking some puff, its probably the wastegate stuck so it over boosts & goes into limphome, had that today on a defender & took 15 min to fix

Ive recently bought a 52 reg facelift TD5 XS, listened to everyone and spent a long time looking, every single car i looked at had some sort of problem with it except the one i finally bought, 29k miles , one owner, immaculate in every way but cost a lot more than i wanted to pay, was over 15k. I saw some newer cars for less but had shagged interiors or higher mileages which i was told to avoid, kerbed alloys, odd colour coolant - should be an orangey colour apparently.....
Good luck with your hunt.

Coolant is a fetching pink. If it's not at the top of the reservoir, don't worry - they often seem to vent off an inch or so if you fill them to the top, which is fine as long as it doesn't keep going down.
When I was looking for mine, I drove several which had noisy (on the way out) ACE pumps. The pump may be vaguely audible as a turbo-like noise which changes pitch exactly in sync with the engine revs, even in neutral and unloaded, but it shouldn't be loud.
Disconnect the ECU (behind the battery) and check the connector blocks. If they're oily, the loom will need replacing, but it's not expensive or difficult.
My brother-in-law bought one with a head gasket problem, so keep an eye open for that. (Oil in coolant, water in oil, white smoke, etc)
Apart from that I think it's pretty much covered above. Drive several before you buy as you'll get a feel for which drive nicely and which feel tired.
