keep losing brake pads
windowlicker:
hi guys another query for you
when i brought the disco there was a rear brake pad missing that i was told fell out so as i lent the car to my brother in law he agreed to fit the new ones which saved me a job :)
all was well untill he lost a front one but we put this down to the front bearings falling to bits so we replaced both front bearings pads and seals and with a little advise from you guys the disco was once again mobile.
however tonight he rang me and he has lost another pad but he hasnt looked to see which one yet so does anyone know if this is a common problem?
also it has spat off three altenator belts and it dont seem to matter how tight i put them on it eventually spits them out what am i doing wrong on a job this simple
the most annoying thing is i havent even drove the car since i have owned it but i keep having to shell out for the repairs i have never owned a car like it :x

For pads to fall out there must be something missing, surely?
As for the belts, for them to be spat off something must be bent or out of line, I would have thought.
Pete:
Did you fit new retaiing pins, and anti-chatter spring plates with the new pads? Have to buy them as a seperate item now. (whatever happened to the days when they came as a kit with new pads?)
Belt. Probably a badly aligned pulley. Check the alternator bracket, if it's been over tightened in the past, it could be running at an angle to the direction the belt runs.
Pete.
POTASH:
pads dont just fall out theres something missing

hate to say it mate, but lending cars out is a nightmare,
especially to family.
