Rear door spare wheel carrier

Hi guys

Ive got a landrover 90 1985 N/A and wit this model the spare wheel is fixed in the rear load area which is a rite pain in the arse! it gets in the way and whenever i need to use it for work i have to take it out to fit stuff in. Anyway i was wondering whether i could fix a spare wheel carrier to the back door, not the swing away type the conventional type. I was worried about all that extra   weight on the rear hinges, would they hold it? also the door seems rather un engineered for the weight. How are these wheel carriers fixed? Any ideas would be appreciated.  :?:

the rear door mounts buckle the door and make the hinges drop after time, you'd be better off getting a swing-away type ( only my opinion of course)  :D

About £100 - £150, depends on company. Really easy to fit, I did mine in a car park at work in about 1.5 hrs. :)

got rid of mine altogether and opted for the bonnet mount, can't see sod all in front now but it looks cool  :D

Well that seems fair enough if you can fit it in a car park! how exactly does it work, do you open the wheel carrier then the door or do they both work in tandem? And also where is it fixed to? thanks again

Mines opesn with the rear door,

The more expensive ones swing with the rear door. Paddocks do a much cheaper one which you have to open separately.
If you need the door opening from the inside, then you ought to really be going for one which opens with the door, like the Mantec one (which is about £235).
The Paddocks one is about £75+vat, but only ok if you never need to open the door from the inside...

Hope this helps! There are other versions of the Mantec one which are a bit cheaper (Scorpion do one I think, as do a few other places - some with a hi-lift mount as well)

Thanks alot for your help mate, yes it has helped greatly. I think i shall just replace the rear hinges and fix a wheel carrier direstly onto the back door like the photographs illustrate. it should be fine for what i want. But i shall see because if i stumble on a swing away type at the right price i shall buy it and use it. :lol:  thanks again lads much appreciated  :lol:

mines is on a swing away spare wheel carrier,available from paddocks for approx £120


bought mine of ebay for a bit less but had a few bits missing/wrongly made

oh rite what bits were missing? I would prefer one as im worried about damageing the rear door with the extra weight etc. Do you think it would damage the door?

my rear door has taken a pounding but thats cos ive got a HUGE 33 hanging of it & also reversing into bankings & things doesnt do it any good,not the fault of the carrier,more me but just got to remember its there

the fitting kit was missing along with the fitting instructions so had a "few" goes at getting the position of the pivout correct on the rear door,

just had a quick guise in the comics & its about £120 ish

How advisable is it to bonnet-mount one? I know the bonnet's a [!Expletive Deleted!] to lift once a wheel's on there. Is it much noisier?

Does that mean you've got a pickup with a drop down tailgate - would advise fitting a spare wheel to these - too heavy.

If you put a large wheel (used to run 33" MTs on modulars on my 90) on a conventional back door, then the door will drop (more) if it hasn't already.

You can get the hinge repair kits from Craddocks for about 84pence + VAT per hinge, so for about £3 - you can have your doors sitting correctly with new bolts and a new 'olive' for the hinges to turn on.

My 90 is an 85 hardtop & has the spare wheel mounting on the bulkhead inside

Yeh its a hardtop, most of the hardtops that were N/a have the mounting inside the back on the rear bulkhead. I mite just leave it there to be honest ive got lots of other things to do to it so i think i should be concentrating on those. The only reason i wanted it out of the back so that i can get more stuff in as its used all the time for work.Its a 4wd van which comes in very useful for my line of work. Just need to fit rear mudflaps, a rear step and a front A bar with spots and oo a ladderack  on the top. Thanks for the advice people much appreciated .

What colour is you LR
My wheel is on the Rear door. and will be taking it off
If you LR is Blue i will do you a swap for your Std rear door

How do you post piks on here so i can show you mine? sorry im new to here. Yeh mines in good nick to im just wondering about the shades as mine has faded slightly, however there arnt any dents or chips in the glass etc and the hinges are good.
