More like a treasure hunt.
We used to do more competitive miles on a Road Rally in six hours than this little event in the Principality does.

What happened to those Iceland events that were on an a Saturday morning.
Once watched a gearbox explode.Bits flying everywhere.

If you want to see good rallying go to a clubmans event.You get nearer the action.

i agree i love watching it but never get to see any.

and as for spectating its a joke now you are only allowed in certain sections miles from the track and can hardly see anything, and for the pricew its a rip off...

It's about time it stopped being the Welsh Rally & came back up to th North Yorkshire Moors for legendary stages like Dalby

And up to Northumberland for 'Killer Kielder' :wink:

You'll never get the Yorkshire or Northumberland stages back.
The teams are frightened of more than a few hundred competitive miles these days.

I can remember the RAC rally and the Gulf Rally's in the bad old days.
The Gulf was I think three days of rallying.
Thre complete days.No overnight stop.
Now if the drivers are asked to drive in the dark or fog they seem to get upset.

Who remembers Eric Carlson an a two stroke SAAB ??
Pat Moss in a Austin Healy 300S ??
The three drivers of the MINI's in the 1960's ??

The Coed y Brenin ones used to be good.

The rot started when the Forestry Commission wanted a ransom per stage mile. The organiser then took the view that if they were paying excessive amounts then they wanted top quality service and facilities.

A lot of the old stages have been signed over to third parties who run mountain bike routes etc on them.

Having spent all of the weekend getting thoroughly soaked and exceptionally muddy playing with the rally cars in the South Wales forests, it doesn't seem to get any better.
Yes I can remember to "good old days" of a 4 day, with 1 overnight halt, RAC Rally, but that will never happen on an international again, or is the event ever likely to move out of Wales that easily. And the reason for that is not anything to do with the MSA in the UK, but with the power of the manufacturers and their hold over the FIA. They wanted to be able to control the amount of damage to cars and to be able to service them easily and more cheaply than having them chased around the country by a couple of vans.
There is also the fact that the cars have now become so complex that centralised servicing with a dedicated regulated power supply and high speed internet connection to download mods is required.

I can remember skiving off work to travel down overnight to watch the rally in Kielder forest - can't remember the exact year but must have been about exactly 20 years ago - it was the last year of the group B supercars before they were banned - some of the stages started before daylight and it was awesome to watch these guys driving at that speed in the dark   :shock:
I competed in the Scottish rally championship at this time and the extra speed they carried was incredible
I also managed to see Hannu Mikkola's knob that year - he had stopped at the side of the road for a pee  :oops:
Spectating was all free back then - didn't realise you had to pay to watch now, never spectated since they moved the rally too far south

I thought the ITV coverage was appaling..... :roll:

They couldn't even repeat the footage of the Ford smashing into a rock which eventually led to the car being retired due to a damaged roll cage

I went to see the RAC Network Q in '96 at Chatsworth, got up real early, blatted north and had the best day ever. Saw the likes of Ari Vatanen, Stig Blomqvist, Rovenpera, Kankkunen, Gardemister, the Simmonite sisters, Tiff Needell, Mark Higgins, Alister McRae, the list goes on....but the best bit, by far was watching Gwndaf Evans barrel roll his Escort Cossie, land back on the wheels, start up and carry on driving - leaning out of the drivers side window to see where he was going, marshalls tried to stop him, but he kept going......ended up retiring at the end of the stage.

What's happened to the TV airtime for rallying - last year they had highlights of each day, now all you get is a measly 30 mins and no decent commentary (where's Robbie Head gone ?)

Its about time the good old RAC  came back, the fun I had as a kid, standing on the island of Jct 24 watching the cars come towards Donnington and getting into service areas at the Hilton hotel at Kegworth. Was there the year Colin Macrae won the world championship for 4 days I was glued to top gear rally reports and picked up a detention for listening to five live in class to get up to minute info.

Those were the days!! The event now is so poor its unreal, and ITV's commentry I'm sorry but the woman on there last night she was just awfull.

Bring back a 4 day event in kilder and wales with Top gear rally reports and old boy Tony Mason.

Jeremy Clarkson summed it up last week on the radio someone asked what he thought would be the outcome of Rally Wales GB, He Replied "Sorry what rally?!"

well been an avid rally fan myself, with my brother been a navigator for leeds mc , i was also getting bored of high prices and no spectators allowed area, so i offered my services as a marshall,been a few times now, especially up in helmsley north yorks to marshall a few, well i dont have to pay, i get free parking right next to the stage and loads of fun !!

I have just spent the last week in the welsh forests.
   I am part of the set up team for Rheola and Walters Arena and Marshalled there on Friday as Sector Official and Marshalled Sunday in Brechfa as Sector Official. I am Knackered!
  I doubt very much that the rally will move from Wales in the near future. I dont see anything wrong with that, the stages are just as challenging.
 Although longer stages/days would be good. Trouble is I would think that getting the required amount of marshalls on the event would be difficult. There are fewer people willing to do something for nothing these days.

I was supposed to be doing Radio at one point there, and when I got to the point it was too dangerous to park and see the track so we complained to the Stage Safety Officer and got moved.
No freebies or anything given to us!!

Dont even mention Brechfa!
  I was sector official. All Sector Officials get thier paperwork in a nice Rally GB mapbag. I asked for this upon signing on and was told that it had already gone with some other marshalls on our junction and we should "Fight among ourselves " for it! Needless to say it was not there as I knew the people already there. I had no paperwork at all, not even the tabard!
   When I got to the junction there were 3 other cars there, when I woke up there were about 20! At least 40 marshalls on a quiet post!
  There was no Mesh up on the speccy area just some tape. Then I heard that Junction 9 a large speccy area had one marshal!
  Not too pleased really but what can you do?

Put a complaint in to the MSA.

It's alarming to think that the Rally GB is one of the better run events on the calender! It's probably a testament to the standard of our spectators, rather than the standard of the organisors, though. The marshalling teams can only do so much.
