What should I get?
« on: November 29, 2006, 21:27:05 »
I've got a "spare" £130 to spend so ive decided to get something for the 90! The only problem is I have no idea what to get at all! The 90 is pretty much standard and im building it up to be an offroad machine sort of thing! lol
This is pretty much what it looks like now except it now has a CB ariel on the roof and me and my mate are making some tree/rock sliders to go on the side instead of the chequer plate.

Anyone have any ideas? Also if people buy my stuff thats in the for sale section I'll have a bit more dosh to spend! :P

Bullfrog I'm intrigued to hear about this winch bumper! How much more is it than my budget? and can you give me some more info on the 2" lift please, but the bolts holding the standard springs on look a bit rusty and it looks to be a rather big job if I did that :?
j99 i forgot to say that i have a safari snorkel in the pipeline (no pun intended) provided via a good source lol! :P Keep the ideas coming folks!

Personnally I go for a snorkel and thus extended breathers...

On the size of tyres you've got, there's no real benefit to fitting a 2" lift... it's not that you need the clearance - then there's the possible extra insurance cost, reduced driveability, and possibly more expense when you find you need caster corrected radius arms, possibly a new ront propshaft, longer brake lines etc etc etc

A nice set of jump leads (see the For Sale section   )

What rear tow hitch set up are you running?

Uprated brake lines from llama4x4

Is the Landy a 300Tdi?
If so has it got EGR fitted, or a CAT front down pipe?? - if so get rid of these!

The Rock sliders are coming as soon as i can get some pipe bent and then my mate can weld them up! :P I undersealed it last month and its just had its service so everything was fixed then! Yeah it is a 300tdi but there is no EGR and I dont think there is a CAT front down pipe :? (how would I know if there is one?)
This is my rear towhitch setup

So I think it is between a new bumper or the snorkel if my mate can get it me in time! :P

What do people suggest for rear recovery points? Jate rings on the chassis legs?
And which diff guards? clamp ones or qt style ones?
(BTW bullfrog ive added you on msn just so you know who it is! :P)

A NATO hitch (with proper spreader plates) is a good method...

Or I like the revolving hitch from Kenson 4x4 (they don't have a web link but they're actually the supplier for quite a few people!!!)

Or SteveG's is quite smart AFAIK it's a Scorpion or Equipe rear tow point.

Or you could just run a set of JATE rings…

Depends if you need to keep your tow bar or not?

Diff Guards... personally I'd got for QT ones....
Although the one from North Off Road is quite nice - is a combination of a clamp on one and slider type.
Or even some of the QT copy's... though some of them aren't made as well as the original!!

Ref: Your CAT.
Have a look at the down pipe from the turbo - if it's just straight pipe from the turbo to the large centre silencer (so a 2 silencer system) then you haven't got a CAT, if there is what looks like another silencer then you've got a CAT.  If you haven't got EGR then you probably haven't got a CAT.

I dont need to keep the tow bar I've just left it on so we have some way of being pulled backwards if we get stuck for now! I think if i get a set of jate rings because they pull on the chassis legs rather than on the end of the crossmember then I can take the tow bar off and put it on when I want/need it and that will improve its departure angle.

My dad said he was going to get the diff guards for the 90 so I think I will go with the QT ones because they seem a bit more robust.

As for the Cat nope it doesnt have one :P

Exactly what I do on my 90 at the moment...  only takes about 15 mins to remove all my tow bar set up.

I've also got a set of jate rings... the only problem is getting to them when you do get stuck - unless you attach a strap to them first.
It is also a bit of pain trying to do up a D shackle when the back end is under water, or submerged in mud.

In this situation a NATO hitch is best.... one quick operation (i.e close the jaws) and your rope is attached.

The bloke who makes them is on here... could try for a Mud Club discount
I'm not really a fan of tubular bumpers though  :(

Where do you have your electrics plug porny?
And I've found him on mud-club after a message it turns out his username is same as his ebay name lol!
When I get the jate rings I will be buying another bridle like the one I have on the front that can be on all the time so i dont have to go fishing around in the mud for them! :P
It has now been decided that I'm going to get one of those bumpers aswell as some jate rings.
Safari snorkel and QT diff guards to come afterwards and rock/tree sliders when me and my mate finish them.

When my tow hitch is off it is cable tied up to the chassis - body support...  I keep meaning to make a permanent fixing but haven't got round to it yet!!

On previous Land Rovers I've mounted them inside... on the panel that covers the back of the lights.  The door seals have enough give that you can usually pass the cable back out to your trailer without a problem.  Also has the added advantge it doesn't fill up with mud!!!:)

A bridle across the two JATE rings... exactly what I do at the moment!!

Well you might all be wondering what that silly young man has gone and done to his defender lol. Well completely opposite to what i had planned!

Ive got a mushroom topped snorkel (which i think my dad has wrapped for tomorrow :P) and im buying some clamp on diff guards and a nato hitch for rear recovery.

As for the bumper im going to save up for the scorpion racing one i think (the one Cassillis has just got 8)) and then a sticky number plate for on the vent panel and maybe some KC daylighters (with the grills painted black) then i can sort out the wiring properly (which i will probably need some help with from someone on here! :?)

(Muddy/Will if you read this are we still going ahead with the rock/tree sliders if i can get some pipe bent? I was going to ask my uncle when he came round earlier but i forgot! :()

btw does anybody know how much the scorpion racing bumper is?
