Leaking power steering oil
« on: November 29, 2006, 20:31:03 »
hi all, i have a 1985 landrover 90 n/a which runs fabulous apart from one slight thing that im rather fussed with. The power steering oil reserve leaks arond the romovable filler cap, the fit is vert tight and does up a treat, there are no dents in the lid and it isnt bent or mis-shaped in any way. So why does it leak? It doesnt leak alot but it just bugs me. Is there ment to be a seal in the lid as in a rubber seal anywhere? Also the fluid seems a bit weak which makes me wonder whether the oil is a bit dicky? or an air lock possibly? The steering does seem abit to heavy for a power steered landrover any ideas would be appreciated. Any suggestions? x

I'm on my 2nd LR.  Had a 90 last time and a 110 now.  Both reservoirs leaked like a mother - much like everything else!

You could change to the later plastic PAS bottle set up... these don't tend to leak.

My old 90 had the large metal type, and regardless of what I did still leaked... so fitted the plastic type - and never had any more problems.

Cheers guys, well thats settled my suspicions, the leak isnt that bad im just wondering why the steering feels abit heavy, not over heavy just heavier than im guessing it should be. The fluid does look to watery to me to be honest as power steering oil is never that thin. Or could it be somethin else?
I think ill change the oil first. x
