Still trying to track down the vibration on the 90. It's worse at around 35mph but always there a bit whatever speed I'm doing.

Having a look underneath (and hearing some clonking on taking up drive, there appears to be some play in the either the front diff or the transfer box. I can turn the propshaft about an 1/8th of a turn with the transfer box clunking away. There is about 2mm of play on the flange of the transfer box.

Likely to be the cause? Is this amount of play too much?

The play is normal. Check uj's first. and prop shaft slideing joints for play. If the vibration started after a lift or castor correction being carried out the only cure really is to fit a double cardan prop shaft with a discovery 2 output flange on the transfer box at the front.

Just fitted new UJs so they should be fine. The front prop is brand new (it was vibrating before that).

It has been lifted and castor corrected by the previous owner. Vibration has only started in the last couple of weeks.

I feels like it is the whole car vibrating though either transmission or though the wheels. It's always there but worse at 35mph ish.

Checked everything from bearings, wheel balancing to gearbox mounts but can't track it down :evil:

Have you tried it without the props on? (One at a time obviously  :roll: )

what sort of vibration? Mechanical clunky knocky type or oh poo let go of the steering wheel type. If erring towards the latter look at the panhard rod bushes and bolts and the front radius arm bushes. Last itme the panhard rod decided to let go it was unmanageable at about the speed you mention.

If there's paly in the transfer box output bearings (you mentioned play at the flange, that'll create some sinister vibrations. So it could be worth getting them checkeda little more thoroughly (I'm having exactly that problem at the moment, myself)

There is about 2mm play at the transfer box flange. There is also about 4mm play in the driver side swivel.

Front radius arms were fairly recently polybushed. must admit I haven't looked at the panhard rod.

The vibration is not so violent I can't take my hands off the steering wheel but is annoying and the 90 is unplesant to drive because of it.

The vibration starts at around 10mph and gets worse as the speed increases. It is at it's worse at around 30mph to 35mph. It then begins to subsid as the speed increases and has pretty much gone by the time I hit 50mph.

Cruising at 65mph and you can't feel anything.

Swap your tyres front to back, if only to eliminate them.

I had similar on the 101 but that was the Pinion bearings, the front diff on a 101 is a Salisbury so it was a [!Expletive Deleted!] to do.

Panhard rod bushes are on my list of things I'd be exploring first..and also getting rid of the play in the swivel... all this play adds up.

Sounds like that front swivel will need looking at too. Doesn't create much rumble or vibration, but they can escalate quite rapidly. If it's the swivel bearings / railko bushes, they're not expensive to replace, but it's worth checking the swivel for pitting whilst your at it (which is the expensive bit to replace, sadly). Put aside a day for the job. It shouldn't take that long but why rush yourself.

Poor old Wolfie had to do 5 in a week earlier this year!

it might not solve the rumble, but it'll improve the feel of the steering!

Keep us posted as to progress  / findings!

Nic,

It's the bearings. The swivels themselves are in perfect condition. All the bits are arriving today (apart from the seal which I forgot to order :evil:  :evil: ). Hopefully will get the job done one day this week. Depends on the weather!!

Might be diff related I'm think now. The vibration is definately at the front. Did spot a power steering fluid leak while i was under there at the engine end. Hopefully, it's just worked loose. Going to wait for daylight.

just a thought but if you are losing pas fluid - what stats the box and drop arm in?

I've found poylbushed made the LSE worse, if there is any play elsewhere their stiffness really shows it up.

It did occur to me the other day it might be that or even halfshaft/driving member damage. Haven't had chance to check it yet.

It was the CV joint. Replaced it and the vibration has gone :D  :D

Yes and no!

Wheel bearing problem on the way back from day one of Santa's Challenge at Rockingham. Wheel bearing will not adjust properly and even with new bearings in there is still a lot of play in it. I'm thinking stub axle problem but no time to sort it tonight.
