hello ive just brought myself a universal back box (boy racer type) it has a 2 1/4 connection bore which is the same as my range rover 3.9 1989 i think.
is there a kit i can but to fit it (diy) or should i take it to a fitter ?

p.s anyone know what it will sound like when fitted its a savage with 4" exit :D

I'd love to hear it when it's done.

The 3.9 exhaust hangs on a bracket just behind the axle, so if you remove the back box and fit your new can it will have to be self-supporting from the existing pipe, cantilevered if you like. If the fitting is strong enough for this then you can do it yourself. Make sure it's just clear of the bodywork.

ill let you know how it sounds :D :D now ive been thinking and if i grind a grove down both sides of the back box outlet and slip it over the existing pipe
then clamp that up (maybe with sealer) then use the bracket that is already holding the back box (its holding on to it at the tail pipe) then i should be ok?

anyway it will be done this weekend :D

Sounds ok, you must have a very early 3.9 then if it's different.

my 3.9 is an 89 but i think the bracket holding the tail pipe has been put on buy a previous owner.ill post tomorrow and let you know the outcome.

Ah, right then. This 88 3.5 had the hanger where it should be but they were a funny rubber bush with a bolt through tat went into a special clamp around the exhaust. All the 3.9s I've seen had ditched this expensive arrangement in favour of a normal rubber hanger like every other manufactirer uses, again in the sam eplace.

SO do you have a redundant hanger just behind the axle, possibly with 3 holes in the top surface?

ok there is no bracket or evidence of there being a bracket above the axel,
the only bracket i can see is the one holding the tail pipe.a funny coinsidence is that my log book finaly turned up today and it defo says 3.9 as does the phelum chamber cover.so i must have a very early 3.9 ? .

fitting the exhaust will have to wait untill tomorrow now as its p***ing down

Anyway, the method you describe is what's called a scarfed joint, it's perfectly serviceable and exactly how I'd do it.

it sounds the same but........it is shiny :lol: :lol:
still it only cost Ã‚Â£99 and took 3hrs in the rain and i hit my head on the garage door when i stood up :twisted:

Then given the possibilty for leaving an expensive can in the dirt I might just leave the back box off when it needs replacing and fit a length os stainlesspipe in it's place.

I did fancy one of those powerflow tailpipes on the LSE as it's got the brooklands bumpers. I'll have to see how it sounds first though.

just for the record the exhaust i have is a savage with a 4" slash cut tail im not sure if twin dtms or other types would sound different but if id have known then id've
just put a pipe straight through.

It's a weird science is Rangie silencing...

having heard so many V8's with Cherry Bombs on, I just had to have one so parted with my dosh and fitted it.... :lol:

Didn't notice any difference in sound at all...very frustrating... :(

then i ripped it off at a pay and play day :?

Afraid it's the massive front one which causes the grief and it needs one of two things doing.....replace it with a straight through silencer and run with no back box (straight pipe like mine has now) or replace it witha straight piece of pipe and run a back box.....

Tried both and we now have four branch manifolds, stainless straight through front box and no back box :o :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :shock: :shock: :shock: :twisted: :twisted:

OOOOh, that's interesting. I have a 4 branch stanless to put on the LSE and one already on Blue, might have to try that. Is it really noisy?

ok i drove past a couple of blokes form work today and when they saw me they said it sounded sweet (in a V8 rumble way) they said that whan they saw it was me they were disapointed (thought it was a sports car).

so maybe it sounds good whilst driving

my 3.5 disco had just a small can in place of the central silencer and then a straight thru pipe to the back which i cobbled together from bits i had lying around and the sound from it was cool...until you reached about 3000rpm then it sounded really harsh and clattery
so i was all for refitting a standard system to quieten it down and had ordered one to fit, as i was out playing the weekend it arrived i just fitted the front down pipes(they were already bent and holed from a previous play day) and for some reason it has completly changed the exhaust note :? but i cant really see why? so i left the rest alone, so now it sounds really good but the fuel consumption has gone up as i keep my foot down so i can hear it :lol:

I have lobbed the back box off 3 RRC's and fitted straight thru now and they all sound different. The reason is the front box.
Depends on the manufacturer of the front box as to how well silenced it is. Mine fortunately sounds wonderful, much better than my dads and my mates :-) makes me wish for a manual gearbox, just have to manually use the autobox.

Advice is remove back box and see if it sounds good, might not be any different. My mate incidentaly has a pipe made to replace his front box leaving the back box in place, but it gets complaints from neighbours 3 streets away.

I have replaced my back box on the Disco with a straight thru polished stainless affair, just slightly deeper tone but looks nice.

i had both boxes removed so it ran on only the cats..it gave a sexy burble when in the mud but got sick of shouting conversations to the girlfriend in the passenger seat and having to drive out of our turning on tick over..have since had much smaller middle box fitted with just a 2.5in tail welded to the end..sounds great and i can hold a conversation without loosing my voice :) :) :)
removing the middle box drones through the car...its nice to start off with then just becomes a headache :lol: :lol:
