High revving

(1/2) > >>

Merlin:
My RRC revs high-1800-on start up & also at times when I pull up & put it in neutral.  I have cleaned the Stepper Switch/motor thoroughly with carb cleaner & then WD 40'd it.  It is better since then as it drops down to normal tick over almost straight away but I certainly dont like a cold engine revving high on start up before the oil gets around bearings etc.
Anything else to try to get it to start up with less revs?
Apart from this problem it runs great & has recently cleaned plugs, new dizzy cap & leads, air & fuel filters, new pipe from the tank to the filter.
Cheers-Merlin

Range Rover Blues:
Try checking the base idle speed.

boatboy:
my rrc is reving about 1800 on start up and somtimes continues for several miles, sometimes when it feels like it.
where is the step motor located?
any help much appreciated.

Range Rover Blues:
Stepper motor at the back of the plenum, driver's side.  4 wires go to it from the EFi loom and it screws into a housing.

If you leave the ignition on for a while you might hear it cycle through a sort of self-test once in a while.

Rossko:
Assuming this a hotwire EFi, the ECU has a little trick of upping the idle speed to 1500-odd rpm when the battery volts is low.  It's just possible you have a wonky charge from alternator occasionally.  Maybe a clue if the headlights seem a bit dim sometimes and then perk up again?

cheers, Ross K
