Can you recommend a high lift jack
« on: November 13, 2006, 22:11:24 »
I'm looking to get a high lift jack and need advice please.
I want it for jacking the vehicle as well as a recovery aid instead of a winch if i get stuck (obviously not as good as a winch but i'm on a tight budget at the moment)
What should I look for when buying one   :?  any tips  :?:

There is only one Hi-Lift as its a brand name. I have a Jackall, same sort of thing. Go for what ever one you like, but I have heard of a lot of the "farm jack" cheep ones from ebay bending to easley.

Jackall are Canadian I think, they are the ones that get copied a lot.  I have a cheapo copy and the standard (the long bit) is so soft the holes are rounded at the edge.

Buy a hi-lift, it's a safety item so don't skimp.  The accessories are not interchangeable with other brands but you get far more choice.  Bumper lift, wheel lift, Defender adapter and of course winch kit, for which you need 6m of 10mm chain (that's heavy).  I've used on and it does the job, always carry it as a spare even now I have an electric.

I looked in my Yellow Pages and found a winch and lilfting crane type company that said they were arbill dealers.  Iwent in ad asked them to order me a hi-lift, they were a little surprised that I had asked them but it was clearly there in the arbil catalugue so they did, charged me trade price for that and the winching kit, I got the 5 foot as it's better for winching.

The *right* choice is a red Hi-Lift jack.
If you cant afford a red one then the black version is a very good alternative

Devon 4x4 sell them at vey reasonable prices
Click this link for Devon 4x4's website, Hi Lift page
If you can wait till the shows start again then you'll be able to grab one at v.a.t. free prices

Hi Jake, now i'm really confused  :?  so is this red hi-lift from Paddock @£44.06 (£37.50 ex vat) part no pm684 http://www.paddockspares.com/sp/category/OFF_ROAD/subcategory/Jacks/searchbox2/1__Hi-Lift.html
a better one than the black one at devon 4x4 @ £52.82  :?:

The red one is all cast i believe and the black one is Cast / Steel i kind of assumed the one with the steel bar would be better  :?

No, it isn't.  The red one is all cast, the black one has 4 pressed steel components, the little bar that pushes down at the back, the foot itself, the top clamp (oh crikey, that's the end of the world) and I think it's the bit that the handle goes in to.

ALL the lilfting parts art the same cast items as the red jack, it's simply a more cost-effective alternative.  I'd rather have a black Hi-Lift than any of the hong-kong-fuey brands out there.

their service is excellent.

I wouldn't use them if they were tha last company in business.  I'd rather change marques.

They supplied me with a winch bumper which was damaged in transit and then proposed a time of three weeks to replace it due to thier insurance proceedures - unacceptable.

Then they supplied my mate with an incorrect bush set (despite being supplied with the chassis number) and demanded that he remove and return the incorrect bushes prior to them sending the correct set.  They refused to send the correct set so that the right bushes could be installed as the wrong ones were removed.

Deplorable customer service.

Any use to any one? cost £66 + carrage
would take £40 or might swap
Remember it will come in handy even if you never use it
I wouldnt use one of the made in China ones my self, you do get what you pay for , buy a genuine Hilift or Jackall
