Headlights won't work!
« on: November 11, 2006, 15:47:42 »
I've got a 98 110 defender and iam trouble with my head lights.
When i put the light switch in the first position the side lights come on and the headlights light up dimly like normal, but when i put the switch in the second postion to turn the lights on full nothing happens. Occasionaly the lights will come on but will flicker while iam driving along and go out leaving me with just my side lights on (not good while driving down a country lane).
I replaced the switch today and it has'nt made any difference.  Has anyone got any ideas?

I thought maybe a bad earth but i don't know where it is.

Dip/dim relay. That's the pink one on the bulkhead behing the instruments.
You might be able to just disconnect it.
I couldn't on my 1996 Defender 110 SW.

I did remove the relay but I had to put a link wire across two of the contacts to get the lights to work at all.

Do you have the ignition on?

The head lights are wired through the ignition.  If you don't have the ignition on they will not work!!!!

Might just be a faulty light switch ;-)

Can you make them work by wiggling it around ?

if it works ont he quick flash its more than likely to be the switch itself, rather than a relay or fuse BTDT
