prop shafts help !!
« on: November 08, 2006, 17:00:50 »
i busted a rear uj on the propshaft so i ordered 4 so i could do the lot in one go, now i got the new ones today and removed and cleaned them all up proir to fitting, fitted the new uj's no problem and was just about to re-fit the shafts when a mate popped round and said  " did you re-fit the splines as they came off ? " oh poo sais i, in my haste to get them off i forgot. Anyone know if the yokes are supposed to be fitted in line or 90 deg off from each other ? or if it even matters ?

The front shaft which is shorter than the rear is ’Phased’, with the joints at each end, A and B mis-aligned as shown below.
The phasing is necessary on the front shaft only to allow for greater variation in angular changes.

a prop with UJ's(not cv joints) should always have the joints running in the same phase. IE lay the prop out on the ground, and the flanges on either end of the prop should be in the SAME plane. Youll get vibration and excessive wear if its run out of plane.
The front on a Landy runs with the joints at daft angles, ie the transfer case end flange is running horizontal, and the diff flange points slightly upwards at god know what angle. This is bad for a UJ propshaft, and so the 'out of phase' thing attempts to cut down on vibration.

for safeties sake and long term life, Id run them in phase, since we dont seem sure of the number of degrees to run out of phase on the front.
Go on....cut me in half........it says SUZUKI all the way thru the middle!!

Cleans the propshafts up.

You should find an arrow on each of the bits.
Line these arrows up.

Though that could be something that LR have now stopped doing, but they are there on my 1985 90.
But you must clean the props with a wire brush back to paint as dirt nd stuff gets in the small scribed arrows.

I had this dilemma when I replaced the fron uj's on the 110

turned out that the two halves of the front prop would only fit in one particular orientation think it was one of the 45 deg out fron the other. slid them together in line and at 90 deg and then they got stuck and I had to heave them apart but at 45 deg they were and touch wood still are fine.

when they were re fitted I used a hack saw to mark them so next time I'll know
