Rear fog's

I tend to work on the principle that if visibility is poor, then I'll switch my rear fogs on until I can see the headlights of the car behind. Then I'll switch my fogs off. If that car disappears, put the fogs back on etc etc...

The other morning it was foggy but most cars just had sidelights on. Those that had headlights on were visible at twice the distance.

Following one guy, I knew he was there 'cause he had his rear fogs on, I couldn't see the three cars between him and me though  :shock:

Also, has anyone else noticed that it's usually the silver/grey cars who's drivers tend not to use any illumination at all in the murk ?


There was the usual parade of poorly set front fog-lamps in the 200yards+ visibilty this morning at 08:00.
Still it made a change from just seeing all the numptys using them in broad daylight & sunshine as they tend to do on every other day of the weeek.

I saw someone with a B*W the other day whilst I was talking to an Ambulance crew outside the unit.
He had fogs on (circa 18:00 & a clear evening)
I asked him it had been foggy where he'd been, after I pointed them out & what they were, he swore blind that they were marker lights
"Never seen 55watt markers" quoth I
"Yeah, so what" was his response

Co-incidentally a traffic car came down then, as the officers had come to speak to a RTA victim.
They soon explained to him what they were & when to use them :lol:

Don't get me started on these.....
I use them in very poor visibility.Thick fog.Very heavy rain and sometimes when driving into a low glearing sun.
As soon as I have a car behind me I switch them off.

The Saturday morning of the Peterborough show I was travelling down the A1M in North Yorkshire.It was misty but not foggy.I caught up with one of those imitation Highways Police vehicles.A new Land Rover Discovery EU05 CCD.This vehicle was running with rear fog lights on.
I complained to the highways Agency.
I recieved a 'phone call from somebody at the agency who refused to give me his name.
I'll quote him
" Rear fog lights must be used at all times when fog is less tha 200 meters".
I queried this and asked about when a car was stationary in front of you in a town in traffic.
He repeated the at all times bit.

I can tell you all I went further over this.
Still neither the Highways Agency or the DOT seem to know the rules.They both pointed me in the direction od the DVLA.....

And as for people who 'forget' their headlights are on full beam when they come up behind you! grrrrrr, more than once I've turned my lights off totally.... illegal but it sure shakes them up, they think I'm a nutter and steer clear of me after that!

followed a few people this morning on the M54 with fogs on..ok so it wasnt below 100yds but it was misty...what annoys me is when they leave them on and carry on into a 30 zone (in traffic!) with them still on. they dazzle you and make it difficult to see brake lights :(
