Series III 24v FFR Not Charging...

Just invested in my first LandRover and we are having some teething problems! It appears to be the same one as 'Rangie 3.0Ltr Dan' posted about under 'First Ex-Mil' back in June which has some pics attached. (although I didn't get it from him myself I should point out)

Basically she is not charging the batteries... The red warning light on the dash comes on - although it did go out a few times for 30" or so whilst driving around the other day. I had her checked over by the very helpful Graham Goodyer of the 4x4 Garage in Amersham and the alternator itself is fine. He has traced the problem back to the black 'junction' box behind the passenger seat. Trouble is the two auto electricians he spoke to weren't happy to open up the box as they were unfamiliar with the 24v systems.

So does anyone know of somebody - ideally in the Herts area as I am just beginning to appreciate how expensive it is to drive her long distance!- who specialises in the 24v electrics and could have a look for me? I am not too keen to investigate it myself now as I am no electrician and it sounds like that black box is something best left to the pros!

By the way it was browsing through the Mud Club forums initially that convinced me Landies were the way forward-so thank you for that as well!

My mate had trouble with his S3 ffr and it turns out there was a big fuse inside that box between the seats and his was dodgy.

Would that be the box with the batteries mounted inside it or the one mounted to the bulkhead behind the passenger seat? I haven't opened the one behind the seat so not sure what is in there (or even if it is wise to open it up?) but it just appears to be the batteries in the other one - I'll have a better look in the light tomorrow...

The box in the back of the bulkhead is for connection of the signals batteries for the radio gear, depending on what it was set up for, clansman or Larkspur systems. I worked with the Larkspur gear myself, but I think a lot of them were changed after I left so not too sure

What does the ammeter read for the vehicle system?

If it had the bit 24v alternator on the engine, try undoing the big plug, and cleaning the multi connector pins

If you can take some pics, of the system it would be a help

Is there a battery box in between the seats?

Worth chescking for corrosion on the terminals, they often got ignored

The one mounted on the back bulkhead with the ammeter in it. Open it up and check it out.

I will have a more detailled look today and try those suggestions - and also try and get some pics for you. (There are a few atttached to the 'First Mil' post in June which are of the same vehicle.)

I cleaned the large plug coming off the alternator and the little red warning light is no more! I didn't get a chance to take her for a proper drive to check it out thoroughly but I now appear to be the proud owner of a happy Landy!

No probs, this is a fault that has cured more charging faults (mainly on 12v spade connectors) alternators than anything.

Always my first port of call, although on the ffr not has common, the plugs used to have a seal in them to keep the moisture out, going back 20 odd years since I played with ffr, but glad you got it right, until the next problem raises its ugly head  :lol:
