Freelander Head problems or maybe not
« on: September 29, 2006, 09:24:00 »
Right, bought the Freelander (V reg 1.8 XEi Station wagon) from eblag.  I am in Essex, car was bought from Dundee.

Had receipt for change of head from May 2006

Its been using water like crazy but none in the oil, also missfires when hot.  Occasionally there was a puddle of water after switching off the engine.

Found the water problem, new expansion tank cap seems to have fixed it.  But the misfire is puzzling.  Got a local parts dealer to put it on his diagnostic machine (www.tlmlandrovers - cost £30 for fault codes read and actuator and sensor tests).  There were no fault codes stored in the ECU but on the sensor tests the crankshaft sensor came up with fault.

Des anyone know where the crankshaf sensor is located ? and is it a difficult job to change it ?

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor
The variable reluctance CKP sensor is mounted at the rear of the engine with the sensor tip facing the engine side of
the flywheel and is secured in the casting with a single screw. The sensor tip of the CKP sensor is adjacent to a profiled
target ring formed on the inner face of the flywheel.

Its simple to change provided you can get access to it (Im not sure how easy this is on the freelander).

And you only need a screwdriver.

When you get the Sensor out, check for metal swarf off the starter/ring gear. It sometimes sticks to the Sensor and confuses it.

Took the sensor out and yes there was a large ball of swarf, cleaned it up and put it back in.

The diagnostic stll shows crank position fault.  so guess its off to buy a new one :(
