Td5 brake probs
« on: September 27, 2006, 09:12:25 »
With the engine running, if I push on the brake pedal it very slowly goes to the floor  :( , have had all the pads/calipers and pipes/hoses checked, no leaks, no bulging hoses - must be the master cylinder, yes ?

There's no leaks around the m/c, but we're guessing that the seals are letting fluid past, and hence the loss of pedal pressure.

Just wanted to check that there's nothing else it could be, before I order the new m/c (£224 + the dreaded from LR   )

It could be the valves in the ABS unit!

Just ordered a new m/c from Paddocks - £126 + VAT (compared to £224 +vat from LR), phoned Paddocks to check what make the m/c was, and the nice lady on the phone says "oh, we order those in direct from LR" !!!!

So seeing as swmbo was expecting a bill in the region of £250, I spent the rest on bits for the 110......

Changed the master cylinder this afternoon, bled the brakes (twice  :x ), and still got the same problem..........

Options/things left to change are:

ABS modulator - feckin loads of money, could it be causing the pedal to go soft ?. Brakes and ABS are working fine.

Servo - my mechanic reckons that a duff servo normally makes the pedal go hard rather than soft.

Pads - I'm using Ferodo pads as they are a darn sight cheaper than LR ones, but I'm wondering if they use a softer compound than LR pads, and maybe (just maybe ?) the pad material compresses slightly when I stand on the brake, and that's why the pedal goes slowly to the floor.

Any other thoughts/suggestions ?

One other thought - are the pads the same for an auto as for a manual ?

its not the pads,if the sero was faulty or well worn the pedal would be very hard to depress as you will be getting no assistance, its something hydraulic, the fluid is seeping around the system somewhere, not looking good on the abs module front!
have you definately bled them pucka!

It might be woirth checking that you don't need to plug in to a diagnostic machine once you've split the system.  Had the rear axle out ofd a Seat something-or-other, and the only way to bleed the brakes was a trip to the main dealer and an hours labour - apparently the machine forces the ABS system to run, and the brakes won't  bleed otherwise.  So thye £15 quid brake hose that will need fitting further down the line will cost about  Ã‚£100.....

Quite probably not the same on a LR, but worth checking.....

RedlineMike will know of course.....!

Triple check the bleeding procedure. Our '94 RRC Vogue SE had brakes changed a few years back by a "brake specialist", who's fitters you apparently can't get better than....

Anyway, three times I took it back as it was pulling to one side. Turns out they didn't bleed the ABS valve block and pump. Took me an hour with a spanner and the book.

Made a hell of a difference.

Course... maybe you already know all this!

Had the same problem and fixed by replacing the M/C as you did.  The dealer need testbook to bleed the brakes afterwards to stiffen the pedel up

Oh bu&&er, this is starting to sound more expensive !

Admittidly (sp?) we haven't bled the brakes in the correct order, RAVE states to do F/N/S, F/O/S, R/N/S and lastly R/O/S. We've done virtually the reverse - furthest from the m/c working ever closer. RAVE also says that you only need to bleed with Testbook if the ABS block has been changed.

The plan is to try the 'correct' bleeding order, if that makes no difference I'll speak to my local independant chap who has Testbook and see how many beer tokens he wants to do it  :(

This doesn't sound good. I've just brought a 52 plate TD5 with the same problem! Very interested in the outcome. I'm currently in a state of denial so haven't started to look into fixing it yet. I was hopeing someone would say all disco's do the same!
