Lovely winch pulled a tree out the other day and it pulled my motor with the foot brake on and my cousins trooper chained to the back with the brakes on across his drive then the tree gave up,Pheww!!!

i'd  go for a superwinch ep9 for the sort of use you are describing. reasonablypriced, cone brake (so could use synthetic rope), good quality.

BTW dom,have u seen how a cone brake works?

My 12k has one & in reality you "could" heat the drum up lowering out :?
