Discovery tdi Overheating

Dave@23:
Hi every body, I need some advice about my 95 Discovery T D I  Auto.
Lately I have been having problems with it losing power when driving along this coincides with the temperature gauge going i9nto the red. When I take the power off and coast along the temp went down   and power came back. I suspected a blown head gasket, but have not got oil in the water.although it seems to be pressuring up.Saturday I bought and fitted a new Thermostat but the problem seemed to get worse.Going over to Clent to work I had to stop several times and wait for it to cool down. When I had finished work I decided to remove the new Thermostat and run without it. I covered about 20 miles over the Clent hills and up the motorway at speeds up to 70 mph without a problem. Now was the new thermostat faulty or is the water traveling through the engine faster because the stat wasnt restricting it. Does any body have any experience of this problem or know of other symtoms for faulty Head gasket . Sorry that it so long but I have tried to cover every thing. Thank you for reading :?  :?

sounds more like the radiator might be at fault
mine gets hot if i go over 70mph for more than a couple of miles
and when towing a caravan going over 55mph it does the same
slow down and it cools down
im going to flush my rad out with cleaning fluid and make sure there is no
mud on the outside blocking it
if it doesnt work then its time for a new rad

I was getting that as well and slow water loss. I changed the stat which improved it slightly but I have just had a new shiny rad put in and so far I have had no water loss. I will report tomorrow on if it still over heats as I am towing a 2ish tonne trailer for 20mins then a nice long run on Wednesday going up and down steep hills the quick way or if the problem is still there the long way round with less hills!!!

I found it was only when towing going up hills in 3rd gear at 3k revs. Mine is an auto too. If you easy off the power down to 2k revs it cooled down very fast again.

The option of heater on full whack works well too to slow the overheating down!

Mark2Disco:
how much was the rad
ouch i think  :(

muddyjames:
£150 inc vat n postage I think. I got it from Paddocks
