I was looking for an article on a certain 'hot-rod' for another forum in some of my old copies of 'Street Machine'[/i] & 'Custom Car'
I ound this article a copy of 'SM', it's the March 1986 edition.

The vehicle is a Leyland Roadtrain. The hood was made by Aston-Martin Tickford.
The interior features; white leather & carpets (verypractical!), walnut veneering
It actually states that it could go into production in limited numbers :shock:  :shock:

Go on guys, get your managers to pester their Volvo, Scania, etc... dealers to ask for a modern version :lol:

Removing the 5th wheel will allow it to be driven on a car license. :wink:

I thought the regulations were more complicated than that now??

a bloody ol' Roadtrain! My dad had the Rigid version of this (The Constructor 24.23) with 250bhp engine and 12 Speed Spicer box, nothing could stop it!

They might be a bit tighter nowdays...

Chris Eubank had his 5th wheel covered over and boxed in to allow him to drive his unit on the road on a car licence.

God I must be old, cause i remember that truck and the Popemobile!
As for nothing would stop it , not surprised the brakes were rubbish!!!!

I remember that, at Truckfest one year, quite a nice one off, got some pics somewhere of it

Also yes with the 5th wheel off you can drive a tractor unit without a hgv, most basic units like that weighed less than 7.5 tonnes then

Smart truck though.
Talking of Chris Eubank, i saw him driving his rig around London about 10 years ago.

that brings back memories.  i saw that at the British Truck Grand Prix at silverstone maybe 20 + years ago..  I used to drive a road train at one of my previous jobs with a 40ft step frame delivering clothes for Burtons to Dublin,Cork and a few other places R.O.I. and also to Germany.. Very Fast with 290 cummins but rough old ride.

:D I can remember reading about that when they built it they had to tilt the cab then push it into tick ford then drop the cab down because it wouldn't fit through the door!! :lol:  :lol:

The Leyland was probobly the finest truck on the road, and most of thats been drained though into the DAFs. In my dads line of work they really take a real beating and it's only the DAFs that stand it for any length of time and keep coming back for more.

Hate to disagree but you dont see a lot of A reg dafs still on the road but lots of erf's still going strong :wink:

You do see a lot of old Leylands though, especially in this area.

It's only since DAFTLeyland was formed that the quality went up.

You can providing the unit is not over 7.5 tonne, you have to change the plate and tax though and get it re-registered/altered to a rigid otherwise you need a class 2 to drive one without a trailer.

We have an old ERF shunter at work, it has the Rolls Royce 265L engine in, it starts up every day without fail and only ran out of tax last year!!

i rember that thing leyland t45 road train it had a rools 265 in it i used to drive one about 10yrs ago  bloody thing had the bronze diff in it could hear it comeing miles away  :lol:
