have you checked to make sure there are no air/ fuel leaks as air in the system could explain the sudden rise in revs and the cutting out as the air gets into the pump. It would also account for the not starting afterwards.As for the tow starting that would just pull plenty of fuel through and compensate for the leak until it is running under it's own steam again.

Sounds like it's sucking air in before the lift pump. Check the connections on the pipe from tank to the lift pump.
