Visual diffs between swb & lwb speedo
« on: August 09, 2006, 20:09:07 »
Hey all,

I'm looking for another speedo for my lanny. I currently have a swb speedo for my 205-16 tyres, though will be soon purchasing 750s (already on wheels).

Are there any easy ways to spot if a speedo at an autojumble is a long wheel base speedo?

Thanks,
Bob.

Hey, your probably bidding on my wheels and tyres, when I ran them on mine kept the standard speedo head, just found that it read under what I was actually doing... I'm guessing that it was out by maybe 3 -5 mph. Don't hold me to any thing though. I know where you can get a genuine new one though  :!:

Cheers

Hey Matt,

That'll be me then!!.
If it's only 3-5 difference, and only just under, then I may not bother changing the speedo, will measure before and after speeds with my Brother's GPS.

Will have to have a chin wag anyway when down to collect

Cheers,
Bob.

The difference is more than just 3-5mph.  It's more like a 10mph difference at 40-50mph.

Simple solution, don't bother changing it.  When going through places such as where there are speed cameras, slow down so the traffic infront begins to leave you behind and the traffic behind you starts to catch you up. :)

Or put a mark on the glass when you can check the speeds with a gps

Dave, it's the same term across the country.  Be it in the midlands, south of England or right up where you are the same term is still applied.  At least that is how I have always found it.

Yes. There are small 4-digit numbers on the face. 1536 is for a SWB. There are others for SWB and for unusual things like One Tons but for a standard LWB (with 7.50s) you need 1408.

40-50 flat out? I think not!

Bear in mind my "tired" S2A petrol does 60 on the flat and has nearly attained 75 (down Tibshelf hill, M1 northbound   ) although it killed some oil seals.

Oh yeah and bob-a-jobs series 3 has a Ford V6 engine

For the sake of completeness a speedometer for 900x16 tyres would have the digits 1344 on it.

SWB speedo = 1536 therefore for 6.00 6.50 tyres QED 205 / 235/70's
LWB speedo = 1408 therefore 7.00 7.50 tyres QED 235/85

and as dan says, FC / one ton speedo = 1344 therefore 9.00 tyres.

Providing the numbers are close to this then thats the speedo that is matched to the original tyres by the factory. as above it is much easier to find a replacement speedo.
