Any one know about dogs?

Dogs will often eat their own mess; their digestive system is poor enough that it's often nutritious enough for them to benefit from doing so.

We had a guide dog boarding with us last year who would do this; this despite being on a carefully controlled (we had to weigh her food) diet that was monitored as part of 6 monthly vets visits.  Sometimes it would seem to upset her digestion a little, most time she seemed to come to no harm.

The advice we were given was basically to discourage it but don't worry about it.  If you understand that she'd cost £20,000 to train to that point, you'll understand they weren't taking chances, however disgusting we might find it.

And of course, they know they'll get to lick your face later! :?

If you are in the North West it's probably a farming area? Go to a farm supplier and see what dried food they have; it is very good for the dogs; far better for the digestive system and the nice bonus is that if you buy it by the sack it saves you a fortune.

Winchman,
as a Pet Food shop owner I would say give up on the IAMS, it is probably too rich for your dog.
Gradually try introducing other makes.
The pineapple idea works with some dogs, but it can make them very "runny"!!

Try going to a small local pet food retailer, and not one of the larger Pet supermarkets, and having a chat with them.

Not a Chocolate Lab, is it?

Big Watty:
It sounds to me, as others have commented, that the IAMS is too rich and largely being undigesteed by the dog thus making ist's poo attractive to eat. We had a similar problem with feeding our dog Chum. The Vet recommended the cheapest ie Chappie and it stopped it - we now feed our dog on dry food (different dog!) with no problems

the previous one lived to a heathly 14 years old
