That cursed EGR valve
« on: July 13, 2006, 17:15:14 »
Been having loads of problems with me truck despite it having had a replacement engine lately.

14.7 mpg and 22 second 0 to 60 (should be 14.9)
(ok not quick but a good gauge of well being)

Even a slight uphill incline is embarrassing

Changed the exhaust system that was rotten for a slight improvement in power but no effect on mpg.

Today I found the EGR valve was stuck open so blanked that off and now have much better power delivery and mpg but still problems with hills and now a screaming from under the bonnet.

I've always run with EGR blanked in the past and forgotten the difference it made - especially if stuck open.

Suspect a turbo gasket has blown or the turbo has munched itself - although it seemed to spin freely and no swarf etc.

Here's hoping its just a gasket now.

My Paj has 144,000 on the clock , had a cambelt and balance belt 20,000 ago-have oil,+ filters every 5,000 ,also use Red-ex once a month, have not had any of the usuall Paj probs Aghhh what have i said -fingers xed
is there anything to be gained from blanking EGR ? or possibly total removal of the whole system?, been told that this leads to cooling probs
even head gasket  failure,
as you normally run with the EGR blanked - whats your opinion and what advantages have you found,

OK - Lots to answer there

Firstly overheating...
Aus and NZ Pajeros have no EGR fitted
In tests in NZ workshop they found exhaust temp up 5 degrees without EGR but still well within spec.

Cooling problems are mainly cos of bad maintenance, sludge, water pump failure, and poor water circuitry in the head. Cracked heads are fairly common for same reason. These have all happened to cars with EGR working - not just with it blanked.

Benefits...
Quicker power delivery, more torque, and maybe another 2 or 3 mpg
Also does away with the clouds of smoke under load.

But has to be blanked - blocking the vacuum line has no effect if the valve sticks open.

Also renew injectors at 50,000 km for peak performance.

When you change belts (90,000 km) also change crank pulley bolt and woodruff key. This is what took out my engine at 180,000 km.

Hth

Thanks for that info Tim ?, I dont get smoke from exhaust under any circumstances, unlike the 2.8 accross road from me that smokes on start up and when pulling uphills, cleaned the EGR when i bought the Paj and it was gopping with sludge, also drained cooling system rad and engine -flushed it through then removed thermostat and flushed in reverse- the rusty sludge that came out was amazing -really filthy gunge took a long time to run clear water, just routine stuff really but goes a long way to a smooth running motor, think i will leave the EGR as is for now,

Erm ... if that's addressed to me

Quote
did u lift the waste gate? useing 2mm washers?
- yes

Quote
have you turned the diesle injection pump half yurn?
- diesel pump has been set professionaly to suit engine

Quote
when did u last renew your glow plugs?
- nothing to do with it but 4 months ago - injectors may be more relevant but these were changed at the same time

Quote
when did u last do a service? ex. oil air filter g/box oil?
- engine was changed 2 months ago with all filter elements and lubes changed.

Quote
have you changed your brakes latley?
- yep, no problems there, car rolls freely

Quote
if your still syuck try the pajero web site
- I run it mate

Wasn't really a question - just a post to illustrate what happens when the EGR valve sticks open.
