What landrover is this?
« on: July 02, 2006, 22:53:58 »
Hi

Im picking up a 90 tomorrow, to be used for road only, its a hybrid, made up of everything from a 90 except a range rover shorterned chassis and axles.

whats worrying me is its registered on a y plate which i thought would be from the range rover but when i typed the reg into the RAC website it says its registered as a 88".

I thought 88" was a series 3. and there are no series parts on it?

What do you think, should i stay clear of it and lose my deposit??

Any help would be great

Rob

If it's got a Range Rover chassis it can't be a 90.

In which way,

could it be registered as 88" due to the fact the chassis is now 88"

Lord knows mate sounds like a right old mash up to me,as long as the seller isn't selling it as a 90,just take it for what it is.

Personaly i'd say it's not a 90 and really it shouldn't be advertised as a 90,it is as it says a 'hybrid' or a mixture of all sorts or somebodys project,if your happy with the price and it's background then all well and good, for that sort of money though you could get the real thingand not have the hassle when you come to sell it.

sounds like some one has made a coil sprung series 3 out of a shortend RR chassis (why not just use a 90). but gave it the modern look of a 90.
i would leave well alone. what parts are s3 are questionable. by rights it should be on a q plate. (i know there are people gonna tell me its fine, but i like things to be right with no grey areas)

sod that! grumble and complain a lot, tell him its not as its described in the auction and that if he doesnt give it you back you'll report it...

its not like he cant offer it to one of the other people that bid on it!! [!Expletive Deleted!] giving him £100 for nothing...

It is a nice looking truck but i would register under a q rather than using a series 3 identity.  Can't see the point in ringing it as a series 3 when it aint a tax exempt reg anyway :?

so if it says 88" on the log book it must be a series 3 identity, theres no way its been changed due to the chassis size,

i saw it on the side of the road so not gone though e-bay

It could be the Rangey ID, that hadn't occured to Me.  Generally the only reason to try and call a Hybrid a 2a/3 is to avoid road tax (which isn't the case here).  I would ask the Seller.  Folk get scared of Hybrids but theres no need if they are well made and properly registered.  I aren't 100% sure but i 'think' if it used the rangey chassis, drivetrain and engine etc It could still use the rangeys ID.  Speak to the seller and if in any doubt maybe the DVLA but don't disregard it just cos its odd.

The thing i am wondering is - if its just for road use, why buy a hybrid at all, why not plump for a standard 90/110/RRC - you can get quite a goodun for your money without any insurnace problems, V5 issues or worries.

If it was an off-road only vehicle i could understand, but for your intended use it makes no sense.

Im gonna leave it.

If it was £2000 then i would take the risk, but for £3400 i dont want any worrys.

Its one of the best ones ive seen but theres too many grey areas.

shame but i feel better now, best to just forget about it.

By all means call me a miserable old git as many do but surely you saw the vehicle, bid on it in an auction won it and now don't want it. I'd say the seller had good cause to be well miffed. I assume you did inspect it and the paperwork before you made a bid?

He said it was a hybrid and that should warn you that it's not a normal vehicle now the poor soul has to plod through selling it all over again with teh stigma of a failed sale attached to it.

Then again I may have misunderstood some part of this in which case I apologise.

i saw it on the side of the road, did not go though e-bay, my friend said he saw it on there and i found the ad.

i do feel bad, but at the same time i dont think he was 100% genuine with me. he wont answer the phone to with held numbers for a start. my work phone is number withheld.

i saw a bunch of landys being sprayed in a barn on my way out of the premises so he must buy and sell, he had no proof of anything, engine, body etc.

For all i know the number plates and V5 could be off and old series 3 round the back.

in hind-sight i should i just walked away but my heart won over my brains.

still he's £100 better off

Hmm, sounds he's a bit of a dealer which changes things.

From the sound of it you shouldn't beat yourself up over it and nor should I!

Please could you point me in the right direction for these "decent" 300tdi defenders for such a price. I'm going to buy all of them and then sell them for six grand plus like all the ones i have seen.

There seems to be a lovely 200 TDI 90 for sale on the GLASS web site at the moment - £1500 as I recall. At that price it should have sold already.

Maybe it's how one defines decent. I was buying around the 2.5k mark for a 200 TDI and lots were really quite poor but then one or two came up that were really good and I eventually got one for £1600 but it was a retro fit TDI to a 90.

I suspect you may have more exacting standards. I wanted something with 5 wheels a 200 TDI and a decent chassis and accepted there's be at least one disaster. I pretty much got that and the disaster was the injector pump.

I think you'll need to pile on the miles and look at a lot of private sales to get what you want but I bet it's out there!

I agree buying the right Landrover is hard work and most bad Landrovers are bought in haste, took me a while to find mine which i paid £4000 for and in the end came only a mile up the road from me.
