Unpredictable starting
« on: June 26, 2006, 20:18:53 »
 Hello, my 1999 Td5 auto had a starting problem about 4 weeks ago, key turning, no firing up.  So I naturally thought - new starter motor.  However it began starting again with no problem until today - so is it starter motor or something else electrical.  Thank you for any ideas.

Was the gear shift properly in Park (or Neutral) ? - there's an interlock thingy which stops the truck from starting when in any other gear. My Td5 auto occasionally refuses to start - just drag the gear lever from 'P' through to '1' and ram it back into 'P', problem solved.

Might be worth getting the battery checked - it could be on its last legs, or a loose battery to starter motor connection ?

Any high-power radio transmitters around when the problem occured ?, it's a known problem that they can confuse the alarm/immobiliser.

Another thing to check matey would be the earth on the starter solenoid (assuming yer newfangled TD5 thingy has one!).

We had this problem on our 1994 RRC. Ten minutes fiddling by our pet garage and Vroom!

Good luck

one i had is the negative lead on on the battery can come loose, the battery terminals can expand in the heat then shrink back when it cools down leaving a loose connection. worth a check to make sure they are tight.
just a thought
