We had the same "jump out" effect on our '78 Range Rover. The final solution was to tie the lever to the "high" position with a rope. This has been working for about 20 years now without any problem.

yep using a bungie cord at the mo, but i would like to have it repaired at some point, i hope they can be done with the box in the car.

We had the box reconditioned at some point but with no effect. Thus the rope.
