« on: May 25, 2006, 22:17:38 »
Hi guys. Bought my first 90 2 days ago and its totaly different to my series...he he.

Took it off road tonight to test the gearbox and it seems very tight in LOW DIFF LOCK.

Also its very hard to get into DIFF LOCK.

Seems to jump out of DIFF LOCK aswell.

What can ya tell me......???

Mine will jump out of diff lock when you first engage, but if you start to drive whilst forcing the lever into the difflock position then you'll feel it engage properly & I've found that it stays there no probs.

Jump out of difflick or jump out of low box??

I wasnt aware that it could jump out of difflock - its a sideways motion with no "gate" to engage, its just a smooth right to left shove, quite still on most though.

Low box however you need to really engage whilst in gear, stationary, and slowly bring up the clutch as you move the lever back (or forward) and youll feel it positively engage into hi/lo box and then it wont jump out.

Check that it is not the gator. I used to have a 90 that found diff lock in low box too much of a stretch for the gator and it pulled the lever back into neutral. Easy to test, just pull the gator off.

Diff lock mate its jumping out of and also some times it feels tight like the hand brake is on when ya try and set off.

Will have a look at the gator...

I'll be watching this post closely, my 90 has suddenly started to jump out of "low-box", scared the bejeezus out of me at Drumclog reversing down a "cliff/steep hill" it suddenly jumped out of gear and i started really moving downhill fast   , "it was a very long way to the bottom", luckily i managed to stop before the sheer drop.
Someone mentioned something to do with the syncro :?:

I'm having a similar problem with my 1990 110 (original t/box - i think).  It will engage the diff-lock sometimes, but jumps straight out again.

Also, it jumps out of first gear (main g/box) in both high or low range when under load (ie going down a steep hill).  That scared the bejeezus out of me the first time it did it (at Malvern last year) and has cought me out a couple of times since (nothing damaged thankfully).

sorry chris, sounds like the gearbox is in need of some TLC, ie recon. as i said mine is jumping out of gear, due to a worn out box.
hope its a simple fix.

Yes but the donor motor box is just as bad. I think I need to save up and get a recon then I have piece of mind..... Its no good fitting a box which is suspect and then one day in the middle of nowhere finding out its just stripped the output shaft..... Oh dear...new box and pinned I think....

yes mate the box has slack in it and I am very picky.... ask redline mike about lt77 boxes they are very soft box and when I have the loud button its not a good mix. He He. Na its ok I just want a good box. I would be better off buying a recon from ASHCROFT

Cheers Chris had me worried there.

I know this may sound like a stupid question but can you replace an output shaft  :?:

Or is it the case that once it goes your better replacing whole box :?:

I don't understand this tight business when you drive off. Do you mean it seems like something's holding it back like the handbrake would or are you just being suprised by how low the gear is? It almost sounds like transmission wind up.

Is it the same in low first non difflock?

I'd have thought your box would go on forever like it is but I'd investigate the stiffness.

The stiffness was me not letting the handbrake off right down to the stop and No lt77 gearboxes have a problem with the gear on the output shaft it wears and then one day when ya out laning or off roading the splines give up and you have NO drive what so ever. If you buy a gearbox from ashkroft transmissions they pin the new gear and this problem is solved.
If ya gona do a job its worth doing right the first time. Dont want to have to replace a gearbox in six months.
