No, turbo's 'should' last at least 150,000 miles... (in theory)

What distroys a turbo the most is not letting it warm up, or cool down

i.e thrashing it straight from cold...

Or turning the engine straight off after a run, where you've been making the engine work - you should really let the engine idle for a short while (or just slightly above idle) before you stop the engine - to allow it to cool down.

But worst of all is the people who rev the engine before they turn it off!!!
When you rev the engine the turbo will speed up - then when you turn the ignition off, suddenly it's still spinning, but with no oil flow!!!

The other factor is servicing.... a turbo likes regular oil changes!!

does anyone know the original settings on the pump ie power adjusting screw , for full turns out etc as did mark it but now lost them marks , dont think its the pump doing this but you never know

Porny:
Very unlikely to be the pump....

Which settings did you adjust??
Just the diaphragm, star wheel and the smoke screw??  Or the main fuel screw too??

dminto69:
wish you didnt ask

i did power adjuster screw and smoke rejuicer on the top of the pump ,and these are the 2 i need to put back as lost settings.

That's the turbo killer.

The shaft runs on hydrodynamic bearings i.e. it floats on a cushion of oil when it is spinning. Turn of the engine from high revs and the oil supply cuts leaving the shaft to spin without lubrication . . . . . not good.

Makes me cringe when I hear people blipping TDi's before cutting the ignition . . . . . and usually its those blokes in country suits, in very shiny motors, that have done nothing more than pull a horse around all their life.
