having a nightmare today well it started last night, driving along started to get a shooooooo noise from behind the glover box area thought nothing more of it only got it when you excelerate so that was that, next day ie today noise getting worse thought nothing of it but noticed you dont feel the turbo kick in and you only get the noise when your in the turbo zone ie 2000 revs ,and now getting a lot of smoke out the exhaust and smelling of oil , ive had this problem ever since i have owned the car but never this bad so the question is do you think the turbo as gone and is there any way of finding out if it is ,i am willing to take the turbo off but really do need help here any suggestion would be great and i have checked the hoses to see if any splits in and there is none helppppp

Hi ya mate sounds like a problem i had similar to what i had the other week-2000 revs shooo noise and lack of power with smell. This may sound daft but i lifted the bonnet and put on the revs and looked, found both the top and bottom intercooler hoses were sucking in.Replaced both hoses
(local independant charge me £18.50 for both) and guess what-problem solved.Hope this helps Andy.

I have got an old Disco series 1, done 170 000 miles 200 TDi. On acceleration I get a puff of black smoke the more aggressive the acceleration the worse the smoke is. I bought the Disco about 10 weeks ago and it uses a little oil but not enough to have had to top it up yet. I have been advised that generally the turbo is good for about 60-80 000, could this be the culprit. I am not getting a loss of power.

Def sounds like a split interooler hose... or one that has delaminated....
Sure you haven't missed a small split??
Other causes....
A leaking inlet manifold??
The air intake pipe has come off?
A Leaking exhaust manifold (or outlet from the turbo)??
A blown/leaking head gasket? - 200Tdi's do sometimes go at the back of the head - no oil/water contamination though - just a leak.
