Thanks for your advice guys.
I've just spent 3 months rebuilding, striped to chassis welded and wax-oiled, new bulkhead, rubbed down and resprayed, new wheels and tyres etc etc.
The only thing I couldn't do was the engine and gearbox, I serviced both in the hope that it might sort them.
The gearbox struggles to get into 2nd plus 1st and 4th pop out.
The engine smokes (light gray) constantly even when hot and blows dark gray when revving. A little down on power to.
Had a few farley knowledgeable mates take a look all came back with same answers, gearbox selectors and engine rebuild ie timing sorting, injectors fettled, valve guide seats and possibly some issues with the cylinders/pistons hence the smoke persisting even when hot.
Taken it to Crosses near Gillingham to take a look they reckon its going to be cheaper and easier to get a replacement engine and box :(
So as usually I've written war and peace but as there are so many Disco TDI's knocking about I was wondering if it was possible to drop one in, got no probs with the welding etc just wanted to know if it was do able, thanks for the advice.

depends on how bad you want it mate, my mate has a lightweight with a tdi and series box, i have a RR box in my series, but its been a right job to fit, everything you could think of has been modified to fit. handbrake, mounts, gearbox tunnel, gearlevers. if i was to do it again i would stick with the series box and what ever engine you decide. i would risk i tdi on a series box, and just have a replacment in the shed should you get carried away :D

in the next few months i'm going to fit a defender 200tdi to mine, and i'm going to use the series box. it should be strong enough. i hope
