i`ve just taken the bumpers off my sj and need to add new indicator and brake lights.
does anyone know whether the light units you get on trailers are good enough for the back of a car? (as far as the mot or law are concerned)

Yes.
The same lighting laws apply in regard of size, 'E' marks etc.....

Just be aware of the legalities regarding positioning (not too far inboard)

Theres a lot of choice for you there, including led units too

As Richard says positioning is the key thing
